When painting with acrylics how do you paint sunlight shining on something?

want to paint a picture that has a dark background and I want like a beam of sunlight shining on something. How can I do that?

  • It really depends on how you want it to look, but you can mix up a white you want to use for highlights, then thin it out with water, medium, or even retardant and put either "god rays" or a wash of lightness over the area, depending on what appearance you want it to have. I like a mixture of water and retardant, since washes dry so quickly.

  • Acrylics are water based, so you may be able to thin out the paint using water to make it more translucent in places?
