Do you think the word bully gets thrown around too much?

Seems like you can't have a discussion, or your kids can't have a dissagreement with another kid at school without one of them being named a bully. Seems like it does a dis service to identifying the real thing.

  • I agree with you. When you don't make a distinction between light teasing or being overly insistent about getting your way and actually terrorizing others, you do everyone a disservice.

  • Bully might be considered overused, but usually if someone is labeled a bully they have a history of bullying, not just innocent teasing. Bullying causes real physical or emotional harm to someone.

  • I agree with your definition of bullying. I just notice how so many just throw the word around. If you want to diagree with someone, or don't get along with someone doesn't make you a bully. I notice when kids pick on each other in school, they get labeled as bullies. Seems like labeling someone, is bullying.

  • Hi Everyone,

We've removed several answers from this question, and wanted to explain why.

We'd like Answers to be a place where everyone feels comfortable asking and answering questions. Ideally, when a mom posts a question in Answers, she'll get responses from other moms that address the question she's asking.

While debates around hot topics are welcomed and encouraged, personal attacks are not. We want everyone to feel comfortable debating their point of view about any topic without being personally attacked for their question.

With that in mind, we have removed several answers from this question because they were personally attacking other members instead of discussing the original post.
