  • My son travels without me and has since he was 7. He's had one since then. My middle son is now 8 but doesnt leave my side so I do not feel he needs one. It depends on your situation.

  • My son had his first mobile at 12..By12, he was involved in quite a few clubs/groups and school activities. So, a mobile was handy so that he could get in touch with me whenever he need to stay at school late, if he needed to go somewhere after school, when he needed me to pick him up..etc..

  • When they're 21, moved out of the house and paying their own bills. There's no way in hell I'll be paying for texting and a teenager going over their minutes. No way!

  • My daughter has had one since about 8 years because she had to travel a lot. However, she is very responsible, is 14, doesn't travel now and still has one.

  • I let my son get a phone at 15 when he started looking for jobs and being out more often with friends,  but that's been 9 years ago. Things have changed since then. I know kids who are 13, play sports, stay after school for practice they needed a phone. My neice's mom is single so to help her daughter she gave her a phone instead of a house phone.  It's really up to how mature your child is and if he can handle it.

  • My son got one when he was 14 because he played sports, my daughter got one at 7 because she is a "social butterfly" and always gone from home at friends homes, grandparents, etc. They both got prepaid phones, At&T gophone offers unlimited texting for $20 and straight talk offers 100 minutes, 100 texts and web time for $30 so no overages ever happened for us. I believe a child should have a cell phone as soon as they are involved with friends, activities, etc so they never have to borrow a friend's parents phone or the teacher's, and I can always reach them without feeling like I am disturbing someone else.
