What happens when people with autistic children grow up? Do they take care of their kids even as an adult or can they ever function on their own?

  • they move into group homes or assisted living,,it depends on the needs and how long the parents want to care for them...there are also a few colleges that are just for Autistic young adults

  • I think it depends on the autistic person and where they lay on the spectrum as well as what therapy they recieve as children as this can have a huge impact on functioning.

  • It depends greatly on the child's level of functioning & the parents' circumstances. Some adults with autism may stay with their parents until their parents are no longer able to care for them. After that, their options are pretty much the same as for those who don't stay with their parents as adults. Depending on functioning level, some may choose to live on their own, some may go to live with adult siblings, others will need to live in group homes and still others may end up institutionalized (in a closed & controlled environment). This is a huge concern for many families & preparing for the future is very important.

  • It depends on the person and how severe their autism is. If my child was severely autistic and couldn't function by themselves I would definitely take care of them as an adult.

  • depends on the parent and the level of autism, their resources, i mean there are a lot of factors that play a role here.. some parents continue to care for their child, some put them into assisted living, some put them into a home, there are a lot of different things parents can do pending on their own situations.
