How do you...

get a kid interested in sports when all he knows are video games?

when he is with me he has no video game time, but when he's at loser dad's house that's all he does. He's really not a sports kid, but i want him to know there is more to life than that fantasy crap.

  • What about karate or other martial arts that aren't team sports. Would he like that better? My 11 yo isn't a team sports person, but he likes martial arts.

  • Why does it have to be sports? Can't you do something with him? I'd have rebelled & wasted your money if you'd tried to put me into sports when I was a kid.

  • Oh, wow. What a great mother - why don't you find something dealing with that "Fantasy Crap" as you so elegantly called it, that he can engage in. Some kids just aren't sports oriented and there is nothing wrong with that. In fact, most coaches don't want kids that hate sports and are being forced on to their teams by overzealous parents. Look into the local theater. Your son may love set building, acting, lighting, and everything else that goes into putting on local little theater productions. Look into playing Magic the Gathering card game with him. It takes thought, math skills, deductive reasoning, etc to play. Instead of trying to change who your child is, try encouraging them.

  • not all vidieo games are waste of time. while its not good for kids to ONLY play them, they are good for your brain.. ALso if your son dosnt like sports but loves video games why not interduce him to the IDEA of sports by getting him a WII? WII sports has tons of different sport games on there and the wii is made to get your child active. maybe through this he will find a sport you both can agree on? My sister was the same way she dosnt like going outside and the idea of "sports" was gross to her. we got a wii for like 50 bucks at a pawn shop for her last xmas and it came with wii sports, She loved it and because of it she wanted a bike and to learn how to play tennis in real life. Sometimes we have to try new things to get to the same answer :P

  • What about trying something that isn't a regular sport? He might enjoy some group activity more, like the scouts or a youth group. I think it's important to get the kids out and socialize and be active, but it doesn't have to be a traditional sports team. What about the 4H club or the Boys and Girls of America club? Here's a link for them: http://bgca.org/Pages/index.aspx.
