What should I do when I go to San Francisco?

We are taking a vacation to San Francisco at the end of August with our 2 and 4 yr old boys. What are must sees while we are there? And for anyone who lives in the area what's is the weather like at the end of August? Are light jackets at night enough? Is it warm enough during the day for shorts?

  • We went to San Francisco two summers ago when DD was 3. It was in July and the weather was very bipolar going from quite cool to pretty warm. Definitely check Weather.com for their temps when packing.

I'd take a tour bus around the city definitely. Walking the piers and seeing the sea lions were a big thing for DD. Obviously you have to do Alcatraz and see the Golden Gate Bridge...but know both of those will probably hold no interest for your kids. Luckily Alcatraz is a self tour using head phones, so you move at your own pace and your kids talking won't disturb others. Can't not ride on a cable car.

We went down to Santa Cruz to the ocean and walked their boardwalk. They have an amusement park there at the end of the walk that DD absolutely loved.

Oh...and Lombardi Street...gotta drive that at least once!!

  • Pack lots of layers. SF gets pretty chilly in the evening...and in the morning. In summer, it usually begins foggy, then clears midday, then gets foggy again in the evening. It rarely gets warmer than low 70's.

SF has lots of museums and parks. Some designed specifically for kids. Try the Basic Brown Bear Factory (at the Cannery), or the Exploratorium, or Pier 39. If you've never eaten at the Rain Forrest Cafe, your whole family will enjoy that. Take a ferry there.

Talk to a travel agent. The's plenty to do in SF with little ones!

  • Can't imagine there would be anything I'd want a 2 and 4 yr old to see in San Fran but here is a bump for ya.
