How many calories should a breastfeeding mom really eat per day?

There is so much conflicting information! I am not looking to lose weight..I want to eat enough to nourish my child properly.

  • Generally 1800 calories. some moms need more, some less.

Better than counting calories...eat to your hunger, drink to your thirst...with the liquid being more important because water is the main component to your milk.

  • LOL, I'm forever hungry! I drink a lot, so that's good. Thanks for your answer!

  • Well, the average person should eat approx. 2000 calories daily. Pregnant women need 300 more calories and nursing women need 250 calories more than a pregnant woman. I'll let you do the math but I don't think I could go on 1800 calories a day, I would be exhausted. This is what I learned from the hospital's dietitian.

And for those wanting to diet while nursing, don't cut calories- just eat healthier foods and work out.
