Is 12 too young for cell phones?

My niece Gracie who lives with me is going into 7th grade she just turned 12 and is doing Cross Country, Soccer, Track, and Basketball she also goes home with friends sometimes, so she is very active outside of the house! I was wondering If I should get her a phone before 7th grade starts?

  • kids will NOT have a cell phone, until they have their own JOB to pay their own bills.

  • If you are going to go that route, I would suggest just a pay as you go phone... otherwise, I am sure your bill would be huge! At that age, kids really don't understand the concept of "only in emergencies". I always say when they start driving... but, I can see where you'd want to be in close contact too.

  • I would talk to her parents. I think 12 is young, and if a 12 year old has one so that she can reach home that's great, but if I were going to give one to a 12 year old of mine, it would have limited access. I wouldn't want her to be able to get calls or text messages from people I don't know or don't approve of, I wouldn't want her to have internet access, I wouldn't want it to be a distraction during class time, or late at night when she should be sleeping. It would be fine for emergencies.

I think cell phones have value, but I also think there are a lot of responsibilities with a cell phone that a 12 year old isn't equipped to handle.

  • I plan on getting my kids a prepaid when they start staying afterschool for activities - so 7th/8th grade.

  • I am going to get my kids one of those phones that only has 4 buttons on it. :D

If she's doing that much stuff afterwards I would ask her parents how they feel about it, but then get her a very basic phone that is pre paid.

  • I'm sorry. :( Maybe just get her the basic pre paid phone model then.

  • I think its a great idea if she's not with an adult at all times. My son has one. Most of the kids in his 6th grade class had one. I don't agree with giving them one just to have one like some parents do. But my son plays travel hockey and sometimes travels with other families.

  • I am with at&t and If we get her one she will have the most basic phone and maybe prepaid but also thinking about adding her to our family plan right now it is just my husband and I but maybe her soon.
