Placenta weight?

So I'm going on 38 weeks and it seems like i've just been gaining lbs like crazy ... I don't feel heavier but the scale thinks so.. I've been trying to keep up my confidence by saying oh the baby weights 7 so I can kick that right off my weight.. and my husband keeps trying to tell me the placenta and everything is a good 10-20 lbs but he kinda changes his story every time he says it so I was wondering if anyone knew on average how much it weights or how much they lost right after giving birth

  • ok here are what they say in the "what to expect book" and remember they are averages...
    baby 7 1/2 lbs
    placenta 1 1/2 lbs
    amniotic fluid 2 lbs
    uterine enlargement 2 lbs
    maternal breast tissue 2 lbs
    maternal blood volume 4 lbs
fluids in maternal tissue 4 lbs
    maternal fat stores 7 lbs
total AVERAGE 30 lbs overall weight gain.

also remember - baby gains about 1/2 to 1 lb weekly from 36 weeks on

  • Placenta typically weighs about 6 lbs. Then you have the amniotic fluid that you lose as well.

If your baby was 7 lbs and the placenta was 7 lbs that's 14 lost already...not including fluids.

  • They pumped me with so much fluid, I only lost 7 pounds after I delievered my daughter. It took several days before extra pounds came off.

  • A neat thing about the placenta, it weighs 1/7 of the baby's weight (whatever that may be)
