  • This is NOT age based.
How responsible and obiedient is your child? Will he stay put in a bed at naptime and bedtime just because you say so? Even when there are toys and books to play with, furniture to climb, and closets to explore?
Toddlers do not see any imaginary boundaries around their beds. If a toy beckons, they will get up. They will hear you in the kitchen and family room and want to see what you are doing. They will wake up in the night and wander the house - or even go shopping like the 4 year old in the news recently. If you are asleep, you can not tell them to stop trying to open the locked kitchen drawer that has the knives in it, you can not tell them to leave the lock on the front door alone.

  • #1 went from a crib to a toddler bed just after turning 2
#2 went from the crib to a twin mattress on the floor at 20 months because he started climbing out
#3 was 2 1/2 when we took the side off of the crib to turn it into a toddler bed. We tried earlier with her but she has issues and didn't care for the change and freaked out, refusing to sleep in the crib at all until we put the side back on.
#4 went from the pack-n-play (she never had a crib) to her bed she is in now at 23 months.

  • IMO toddler beds are a waste of money. We moved ours into a full sized bed and just used bedrails till they were used to it.

  • We skipped the toddler bed and went straight to a twin bed. We did not use bedrails, and he never fell out. He was about 28 months old. He loved it, and it made him feel like a big kid.

  • We moved the boys to twin beds. The oldest when he was three because his brother was coming along, and the younger when he started climbing out of the crib at about 2 1/2.
