Doubling times? twins?

hCG levels double about every 48 hours right? so last Monday (12/15) at 1:30 pm my levels were 251. So wenesday is should be say 500, Friday 1000, Sunday 2,000, Today about 4,000 right? So I went back yesterday (12/22) at 10 am and my levels came back at 6519! It should have been between 2-4,000 right? around 3,000 maybe? Does over 6,000 mean twins?!?

I don;t have my first real appointment until 11 weeks (Feb 5) and we only hear the heart beat then, no u/s until 18 weeks. I'm just wondering if anyone had twins and know how their numbers doubled. Thanks everyone!

  • With my twins, my levels were way off the chart. In fact, my levels were even very high for twins. As a PP said, your numbers could mean you are having twins, you're further along than you though, there is a problem, or you just have high hcg levels. Because my numbers were so high I was concerned that there might be more than two or that at least one baby might have problems, but we ended up with two perfectly healthy babies. It's maybe not a proven fact that high hcg = severe morning sickness, but I had high hcg and awful morning sickness, so if you don't have that yet it might be coming. Good luck!

  • 3 weeks LMP: 5 - 50 mIU/ml
    4 weeks LMP: 5 - 426 mIU/ml
    5 weeks LMP: 18 - 7,340 mIU/ml
    6 weeks LMP: 1,080 - 56,500 mIU/ml
    7 - 8 weeks LMP: 7, 650 - 229,000 mIU/ml
    9 - 12 weeks LMP: 25,700 - 288,000 mIU/ml
    13 - 16 weeks LMP: 13,300 - 254,000 mIU/ml
    17 - 24 weeks LMP: 4,060 - 165,400 mIU/ml
    25 - 40 weeks LMP: 3,640 - 117,000 mIU/ml
    Non-pregnant females: <5.0 mIU/ml
    Postmenopausal females: <9.5 mIU/ml
Here is the diagram for a single pregnancy. So I would say your in the high range! :) It possible could be twins. But sometimes it doesnt matter how high it is!

  • They never told me my levels, but I had an u/s at 8 weeks and was able to see both. I would call your doctor to see if you could get in sooner for an u/s to confirm. I know with twins they put me on extra vitamins and I would they the sooner they know it's 2, the better.

  • my levels were high at first like yours and i was only having one. I had a u/s at 7wks. Id call your dr and see if you can get a quick u/s done to confirm. infact im surprised they dont wana do one at 6 to 8weeks to see and make sure the baby is developing right and the heart is beating.

  • My friend was just going through this. Her HCG levels were extremly high for how far along she was. (the doctor and her both thought 6 weeks along). He told her that it could be one of four things
    1) You are having mulitples
    2) Your farther along than we had thought
    3) There is something wrong and we need to wait to see what the ultrasound says
    4) You just have high levels

Well, when she had her ultrasound...she just had high levels. everything was working out fine with this baby so far (she just has had really bad morning sickness)
