What to do with the bone of a ham?

I had an 8lb spiral cut ham. We barely made a dent in it. My first question is there anything you can do w/ the bone and what is left on it? (besides Ham and beans please.......yucko.)

And then what are your fave leftover ham recipes?

  • We would give our to our dog before or use the bone to season greens like collards or kale. I'm not sure where is much else you can do with it.

  • You could boil it (discard bone) makes great soup stock.

  • I recently made soup with mine. I put it in water to cover and added chopped onions, celery, carrots, potatoes, a couple cans of beans- that you could omit if you prefer. I also added a can of tomatoes. After simmering for a while I removed the bone and pulled off any ham that was still attached to it and mixed the ham back in. It made a very nice soup.

  • We had a 14 pound ham & I called my brother to ask if his English Sheepdog could have the bone. He's picking it up later. If I only had one dog, that's where it would go instead, but three dogs, one bone-would definitely not be pretty!LOL
