Does buying 2nd hand clothes equate to some financial status?

Recently I've been struggling with the thought of wether to buy new clothes for my 1 year old daughter or search online (ebay/craigslist) for 2nd hand clothes.
We are a pretty well off family with combined income over 150k/yr and we are in good financial situation, however we really don't feel the need to go shop for new clothes each time she grows out of her old ones. (We will eventually buy her new clothes once she start realizing the joy of shopping!!!)
I started to look on various sites and found sellers for 2nd hand children clothes so I began to buy from them. Not only does it help us save money but i truly find that we can help recycle clothes. We recycle everything, why not clothes?
I recently encountered a seller that wanted to deliver the clothes to us instead of me going to pick the clothes up so i gave them our address. As they came by, I can see the puzzled expression in their face. They are thinking why would people like us want to buy 2nd hand clothes. Yes we live in a nice neighborhood and yes we have a nice house but we are also money conscious individuals!
My question to you all: Is is wrong to buy 2nd hand clothes for my child even if I could afford to buy her new clothes???  Did we take away opportunities from the people that really are in need to buy clothes second hand by searching for a bargains even if we don't need it?

  • That's not wrong at all. I'm with you! Why not recycle clothing just like anything else, and save money in the process! I don't think of it as so much of a financial status as an environmentally conscious, money smart status. lol. I say go for it.

  • Absolutely not! Kids that young grow out of clothing so quickly, there's really no point in purchasing all brand new clothing (I do on occasion, but not their entire wardrobe). A lot of 2nd hand stuff for that age is still in great condition anyway.

  • No its not wrong. I have been doing it for years. Its a good way to recycle and you can find some very nice named brand clothing, that are 2nd hand for far less than new ones and still in excellent condition

  • Baby's grow so fast and they usually get a ton of clothes that first year at least. Most of those clothes are worn once or not at all, What you are buying is so slightly used you can hardly tell for the most part, usually. I say why not. Bargans are for everyone.

  • I routinely shop at thrift stores and consignment shops, and I'm a lawyer representing large companies in litigation. I learned the value of money from my parents-- my father was an executive at Microsoft so we never had financial issues. My mother often found wonderful furniture pieces at thrift shops that she would refinish. Besides, most thrift stores that we went to were associated with organizations that had social benefits, so not only were we getting a great deal, we were helping our community by both purchasing and donating to those same organizations.

  • Of course not. It's frugal. Kids outgrow their clothes (or ruin them) so fast it's really a waste of money to purchase new.

  • I live in an upper-middle class neighborhood, and I'm not the only neighbor I've seen in our local second-hand kids shop buying stuff. Let me add that when I put something out at the curb with a "FREE" sign on it, it's just as likely to be picked up by someone driving a Cayenne as it is by someone in a Caravan.

  • no its not wrong. actually i got 4 bags of clothes from the friend of the family and i loved it. i would never say no to second hand clothes. also try freecycle.com. you can get anything. i had given alot of her baby clothes to people. its exactly what you said recycle clothes site and everything else. i have gone to consignment shops and i am going to be bringing alot of her clothes which are in excellent condition to the shop also. i mean some of her clothes are barely warn if at all. kids grow so fast and its just not worth to buy $10 pants for an infant. yes i am guilty of buying new but i love buying sale and consignment shops are awesome also. good for you and i wish more people would.
