Kids sleeping in our room!

Okay our youngest who is 17 months spent 4 days in the hospital. She was really sick and went through a lot even a spinal tap. Ever since she was in the hospital she will not sleep in her room and now with our oldest she is saying their are monsters in her room she will be three next month. Any suggestions on getting them back in their rooms without causing any trauma to them?

  • Leave one or two night lights on so that they can see what is in their rooms. When they come to your room firmly lead them back to their own rooms. Perhaps leave the doors open to all of the rooms so they'll feel your presence.

  • For your 17 mos old I think the best thing to do is to go right back into your regular night time routine. You may have to let her cry it out for a bit but she'll get back into the sleep groove soon if you do that.

For the almost three year old, reassure her that there's no such thing as monsters and just keep putting her back in her own bed. You could also try a behaviour chart with her. Every night that she stays in her bed until morning she gets a star on the chart, perhaps a small toy from the dollar store or she can chose a special activity to do with mommy or daddy. Also, check out the Jan issue of Parents Magazine. They address monsters under the bed in that issue.
