Can you have smells come through the walls?

I know this might sound silly or like a dumb question but here goes...can you smell things through the walls? Like we share one wall with someone (live in townhomes) and i was wondering if they were smelly if i could actually smell it? I came home from work the other night and checked on my son like i always do and his room stunk of pot. it was horrible. and i know that my hubby doesnt do it. plus if for some reason he did the whole house would stink. So i am wondering if it could be coming through the wall from the neighbor? Maybe they were doing it in the room that shares the wall with my son...i pulled him out of there and let him sleep with us for the night. but plan on complaining. Please help though. and sorry so long!!

  • Oh yes! We have this problem with the lady who lives in the apartment below us. The house we live in was divided (we have the top & she has the bottom) and it is a really old house (over 100 yrs old) and built with what is called "balloon construction", meaning the walls were built & floors added later, so there is nothing inside the walls to separate the house levels. When she smokes, it comes right up through the walls and seeps out into our rooms - ICK!! Which is why we are saving to move as soon as we can.
