cough, runny nose, 4 mo old

I don't know if a cough is a sign of teething, but I've heard a runny nose is. I also heard giving babies cough meds isn't good and some are even being taken off the market. How do I know if its a cold, he's teething or if it's asthma or allergies and what can I do to help my little man? he has had a cough for about 2 mos now but all docs have said it's normal and then he did it more frequently, Sometimes it seems like he does it on purpose but today its noticeably worse.
