Should I be nursing at night?

My 4mo DD wakes up every 1.5-3 hours to eat during the night- and I thought that was fine.. but I keep reading things about "no night feedings" because it will become a bad habit? She hasn't started rice cereal yet (I'm waiting to talk to her doctor next week).. is it still ok to be nursing her throughout the night?

  • Yes, you should feed her through the night. It can take a baby a while to start sleeping through the night without eating. There are a lot of people out there telling you what you should and should not be doing, but always go with your gut. I did a lot of research when I was pregnant, and I liked the ideas of Dr. Sears. Look him up and check out his website. He was my savior!

  • Yes you'll still have to feed some at night. Don't starve your poor baby! Eventually her brain will mature to the point where her empty belly won't be waking her up so much anymore. Just be patient. Try doing a "marathon feeding" as part of her bedtime routine to get as full a belly as possible so her first stretch of sleep can be a longer one. (Try "Boob, bath, boob", lol)

  • Yes, BF babies rarely sleep through the night at this age. Just feed her when she wants to eat.

  • Phew.. thanks guys! I don't mind doing it at all, she's so cute when she's sleepy- just wanted to make sure I wasn't setting myself up :)

  • I don't see anything wrong with breast feeding your child at night. They know when they are hungry and we are the meal. Don't stress about it. I did for all my 3 boys and they are fine! Its ok. My mom told me once when I had my first born....she said "lisa, people will be giving you advice all the time; you can take or leave, its up to you." And she was completely correct!

  • It is absolutely fine to nurse your baby at night, especially when she's this young. Please make sure you don't introduce solids until your baby is at least 6 months old. Check out this article:
