Name-brand clothes

I gave in this Christmas and bought my 11 yo son an outfit from Abercrombie, and got him a $50 gift card there. I'm not one to follow the crowd, and I don't spend alot of money on my own clothes, but all of his friends wear name-brand clothes, and I want him to feel like he belongs. He didn't come out and ask for these clothes, but has hinted that he would like something. Has anyone else bought clothes for their kids that were out of their normal budget range, just so your kid will feel like he fits in.

  • Yes, I have done it, but only when I could really afford it.... not if it was going to set us back.

  • Yes, I do it when I can afford it... I think jeans and shoes are the top items with kids.. but I don't mind picking up those items on sale or at discount stores, too!

  • Of course :)
And I find really good deals at Ross and TJ Maxx. My girls love SouthPole Jeans, I can pick them up at Ross for about $6-10 a pair.

  • I will buy my kids a few name brand items when they start caring. Particularly in middle school, "fitting in" is very important. If I can help feel a little more comfortable during that rocky time, I'll help.

That doesn't mean I'll get them EVERYTHING in name brand -- just a few key pieces. They will also make some of their own buying decisions. They may choose to spend $50 on one current name-brand item, or use it differently and get multiple items.

  • I don't have a problem with the Abercrombie price tag, but have you seen their advertisements? I wouldn't want those clothes on an 11 yr old. I sure wouldn't buy them for my kids. That's like buying clothes with a playboy bunny on them letting your kids wear those! OMG!

  • No I have not. My kids have not really started to complain about things yet. I also know that my oldest seems to not care. I think that if they started to ask I might, but none of their close friends get designer clothes either so I am hoping to be safe for a little longer.

  • My kids clothes are second hand or at the best Wal-Mart. You can get he same look ithout having to put out a lot of money.

  • NO. We shop strictly at thrift shops. My kids have larger wardrobes and are better dressed than most kids we know. We find plenty of good quality name-brand clothes there, but I wouldn't pay full price for it.
