Is Your Stroller Stressing Out Your Baby?

Which way does your baby face when you push him in your stroller? I have a stroller that I can flip so that my baby can face me or face the world. She's chosen to face the world, which is fine with me because it's a whole lot more interesting than my face, which she sees all the time. But a new study says that I'm doing it all wrong.

According to a study of more than 2,700 parents and their babies, pushing your little one so it's facing outward in a baby stroller can be emotionally isolating for him. The research found:

1. Parents using face-to-face strollers were more than twice as likely to be talking to their child.

2. Babies heart rates fell in parent-facing strollers and they were more likely to fall asleep, which indicates they may be more stressed out when facing outward. (Hmm ... or maybe just not as bored?)

3. Mothers and infants laughed more when using face-to-face strollers.

The researchers emphasized that the study was small and needs more investigation, but said, "If babies are spending significant amounts of time in a baby buggy that undermines their ability to communicate with their parent, at an age when the brain is developing more than it will ever again, then this has to impact negatively on their development."

I'm not sure there are that many strollers on the market that are face-to-face or forward/backward adjustable, and those that are cost a lot. Like $800. Would you pay $800 for a stroller just so your baby can face you? Or will you stick with a cheaper stroller and just spend plenty of time talking to your baby at other times of the day?

My son likes his stroller. I like his stroller. What do a bunch of people who don't even have kids; really know about kids.

Yeah, my poor kid is going to have to be emotionally scarred, at least until they come up with a mommy-facing 20 dollar umbrella stroller.

Though I find it really distracting having my little guy right there in front of me to look at, I enjoy shopping that much more because he's with me, so I'm intrigued by the idea of this stroller...

I wonder if this is just a ploy by the stroller companies to guilt us all into buying new strollers?

JayGi...

NO WAY! not anything over $150. but, yes, I would love one that went either way. I'm sure you do talk more to the child if they are facing you! that is a picture of my DD on the story, and that is our "car stroller" we have a "big outing stroller", "car stroller" and my "mall crawler umbrella"

we are big stroller people! even if she isn't in it, it is a great way to carry all your stuff while out and about!

I think that no matter how hard we try as parents we will always be doing SOMETHING wrong!  I like the out facing strollers my DD is 15 months and points and "talks" to the people and if its nap time she still puts herself to sleep!

I also love my big stroller but it doesn't go both ways.  I have often thought when she is sleeping or eating something while out and about that it would be nice to have her face me at that point but I think there are times when the baby should be facing the world.  Plus I could never justify spending $800.00 for a stroller.
