Is Breastfeeding Boring?

breastfeeding boring multi-tasking multitasking

Do you multi-task while you nurse?

A friend told me how much reading she got done while she was breastfeeding, but when my baby was new, I never felt comfortable doing anything else while I was nursing her. I never watched TV, ate, read, e-mailed, or talked on the phone. I just looked at my daughter and talked to her and sang to her.

My baby is now 14 months old and although I feel kind of guilty, I sometimes do other things while I'm breastfeeding—check e-mail or talk on the phone. I've never really been bored while I feed her, I multi-task more out of necessity (otherwise I'd get nothing done). I'm becoming a pro one-handed typist. But some women do get bored while nursing their babies and see it as time they need to fill. For them, guilt comes from "just sitting around feeding the baby" rather than from not giving the baby their undivided attention.

Do you get bored while you're breast- or bottle-feeding your baby? What do you do to fill the time?

I didn't when I was nursing.  I read to him, I enjoyed him.  We only nursed for a short time so I'm glad I didn't "waste" it by doing something else.  I specifically turned off the tv so we could bond.  Some times I'd turn on some music and sing to him, sway to the music, or just relax and enjoy the songs.  I think in the beginning it is important to focus on the baby while feeding for bonding (the bond forms over many things, obviously, not just feeding, lol) because you never know how soon you'll have to stop nursing, go back to work, etc.

Yeah, I definitely have and do and (especially at her age) get a little restless sometimes. When she was a little younger, to help with that, I would point out her body parts and sing songs to her like Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes. That helped her learn some of those parts pretty quick. Or I would go over letters and numbers a little bit. But these days, it gets a little harder to not get so restless and I do feel a little bad about that.

sure do. the most i do, b/c its really the only thing i can do when bottle feeding, is watch tv. with my toddler around, i just put on a show for her to watch for the few mins it takes to feed my baby.

I definitely did while nursing.  You can only talk to your kiddo, look in their eyes, and whatnot for so long.  When a kiddo nurses for 40 minutes... yeah.

So I'd read books, and I'd read them outloud, no matter what it was.  If he was trying to fall asleep and I wanted him asleep, I'd read carefully because sometimes the page turning would disturb him.

I don't know if I would call it bordom but sometimes when she is half asleep it is a bit akward.  I love breastfeeding my little one, I can't wait till she is a bit more cordinated and can play a bit while feeding.

I usually watch tv or use the computer (no typing) while nursing.  ESPECIALLY during those wee hours because I fall asleep so easily (doing something keeps me awake).

I do spend plenty of time just staring at the baby as she sucks or sleeps.  It's a balance :)

It depends on wether he's in tune to me or not. Sometimes he'll smile and stare at me while he's eating...those are the times where he has my undivided attention. But if he's really tired or not in the mood to look at me, then I watch tv for the whole 7 minutes it takes to breastfeed him. When he was a newborn, I did feel little pangs of guilt if I didn't constantly stare into his eyes, lol, so I know what ya mean.

Oh yeah with my dd, my 1st, I just fed her and would watch tv - as she didnt' like to be rocked or anything.. My son, loves to be rocked in a quiet room so I have gotten TONS of reading done with him... I started keeping track in January and I think I read 10 books (and 4 of them were the Twilight saga so at least 500 pgs each)...
