Get Your Screaming Baby to Sleep

October 24, 2008 at 1:58 PM by Cafe Suzanne - Comments (6)

There's nothing worse than when your baby is upset and nothing seems to calm him so I really felt for mommyxina2008 last night. She posted a cry for help in The CafeMom Newcomers Club because she could not get her screaming baby to sleep and she was exhausted. All the moms chimed in with some really good advice.

jcsg suggested a car ride.

A few moms suggested taking the baby outside for some fresh air.

Several others thought it was gas and suggested gas drops.

momwitho4 said to put him to bed with a vacuum cleaner or a fan running. She said the "white noise" helped her kids a lot, and mommy2-3kiddos added a hair-dryer to that list.

leslie_renee suggested putting the baby in a vibrating bouncer.

Meissilly said to "hold him upside down (supporting his body like you would if you were giving the Heimlich and SHHH SHHH really loud. It's like being back in the womb again."

jaimieleigh81 suggested to swaddle him using the directions on thehappiestbaby.com.

mommyxina2008 never checked back in so I'm not sure what happened but I really hope she got the baby to sleep—and that she got some sleep herself.

What are your surefire ways for getting an unhappy baby to sleep?

Running water. I put her in the bjorn and wash her bottles, the running water konks her out. I also turn on the bathwater and sit there for a couple minutes with it running. Not the most environmentally friendly advice, but if your desperate, your water bill is the last thing your thinking about!

I take my daughter to her nursery and turn on her classical music. I also keep her swaddled while rocking her with the music playing! the music is so soothing.

Saman...

So far I've been really lucky.  We have had a set routine since he was a week old and it works.  We do bathtime (sometimes in the tub, sometimes with a wet washcloth because his skin is sensitive), then lotion and any creams or ointments he needs, then pajama's.  Then I carry him into his room and we turn on the night light, monitor, and CD player together.  Then I lay him down and give him his binky and blanket and read him a story.  Then I give goodnight kisses and turn off the light, and he's generally asleep within 10 minutes.

He's an odd baby though.  He can't stand white noise or being swaddled.  So it's really lucky for me that he goes to bed so easily!
