This Week's Secret:
I'm a breastfeeding mom and have been sober for 19 months, but I've been craving beer like crazy. I won't drink, but I can't help fantasizing about it. — anonymous

My MD told me it was OK to have one beer (of course.. Utah beer is only 3% alcohol so in a 12 oz bottle that's nothing to your body).. and that if you pump ahead of time and wait 6 hours there would be none of it left in your system. But, I agree with ethans_momma... really, you wont BF forever so I waited anyway. If you are really really craving beer, you can drink Odouls which has no alchohol.. tastes the same. Might satisfy the craving.
Alcohol goes through your breastmilk just like it goes through your blood. If you have a couple of drinks at night before your baby goes to bed, you'll be fine when the baby wakes up in the morning, this of course if your baby sleeps through the night.
Well my lactation consultant said I could have a glass of red wine(small amount) to increase my milk production every once in a while (not every day) and I did it and you know what IT WORKED lol
Soooo... drink a beer. You CAN drink and nurse. One beer isn't going to hurt the baby.

In general, if you are sober enough to drive, you are sober enough to breastfeed. Less than 2% of the alcohol consumed by the mother reaches her blood and milk. Alcohol peaks in mom's blood and milk approximately 1/2-1 hour after drinking (but there is considerable variation from person to person, depending upon how much food was eaten in the same time period, mom's body weight and percentage of body fat, etc.). Alcohol does not accumulate in breastmilk, but leaves the milk as it leaves the blood; so when your blood alcohol levels are back down, so are your milk alcohol levels.
Always keep in mind the baby's age when considering the effect of alcohol. A newborn has a very immature liver, so minute amounts of alcohol would be more of a burden. Up until around 3 months of age, infants detoxify alcohol at around half the rate of an adult. An older baby or toddler can metabolize the alcohol more quickly.
I am not a big drinker never really have been. When all my friends were getting drunk in HS I was drinking the same drink all night long. DH and I have been together almost 3 years, I have been drunk 2 times. Once was the night we met, we were set up and it was a new years eve party..I went home alone and was completely sober when we decided to see each other again..and the second time was shortly after I had my first at his grandmas house for christmas eve...it was his family and I want to get drunk everytime I am around them...they would knock a recovering alcoholic off the wagon in 5min flat..
For this entire pregnancy I've craved beeer...hmmmm. which is odd, because I've never been a beer drinker, lol...dh says that's how we knew we were having a boy-
Your body will metabolize one drink per hour. So wait at least one hour after your drink to breastfeed (2 hrs for 2 drinks, etc). And your baby will be fine. But if she's been "sober 19 mos" is she in recovery? If that's true than maybe seek a terapist or AA meeting??

Well only when I was out at a festive occasion like...a New Years Party. But the thing to remember is that- it ends. Alcohol will be there forever.
