My son did his first crawl while in day care. So his teacher was the first one to see it, not me. That always makes me a little sad. I wish I could have changed circumstances and been around more, but it was just the way it was.
It's hard to miss that first smile, laugh, step or word. Sometimes they happen so fast, out of the blue. Even stay-at-home moms can't always be in the right place at the right time.
Slightly different issue, but momtoezzie's 8 month old has been Army crawling or "scooting" a few feet in front of herself for a couple of weeks now. momtoezzie thinks her daughter is full-fledged crawling when she's not looking. She'll put her down in one spot of the room, and then seconds later, she'll appear miraculously in another spot.
"Whenever I look, she stops what she's doing and then whines for me to pick her up. I try encouraging her by motioning for her to come to me and telling her 'good girl', or coaxing her with a bottle or a sippy cup. But once I look at her, she stops what she's doing! I even try getting on my hands and knees and slowly start creeping toward her to show her what to do."
At least there's a bright side ... one of the commenters in Advice for Moms, where momtoezzie originally posted, said crawling is not technically a developmental milestone. But for some reason, that doesn't make me feel a whole lot better about missing it. :(
Have you been present for all of baby's milestones? Did it bum you out to miss it?

I'm worried about this one for my husband...Baby is due in December, and the ship isn't due back from deployment till April...which probably means they won't be back 'till at least May.
I missed rolling over, sitting up, crawling, first steps and first words because I was at work. It's a horrible feeling to know that you missed most of your childs 'firsts'.
With my DD I miss almost all of them but Now with my DS I have been there for every one of them. Well is not a milestone (I think) but I dint discoverd my DS first tooth it was my BIL and I was so piss off it wasnt me LOL
Luckily I had a year maternity leave so I was around for everything. I can imagine how hard it would be to miss all of your child's "firsts!"
That's my baby up there, too :)
i missed my son rolling over for the first time tonight. we went out for the 3rd time since having him....4 and a half months now!! i think it honestly took just being in a new environment and wanting to explore to get him motivated to roll over and check it out, however i agree......i dont think it makes me feel any better. i feel like im not doing something right, he didnt do it for me..yadda yadda yadda. im a SAHM..so ive seen everything else but that one thing i missed..*sigh* i kinda wished she hadn't told me he rolled and i could have seen it myself and just assumed it was the first time. sounds bad...but ignorance might have been a little more blissful. im just glad he finally rolled over, im happy he is healthy and making milestones...but damn...the one night i get to go out?!?!?! lol

So far I have been there for every milestone, Daddy hasnt though since he is the one working and I stay at home with him. But I would record it on video on my cell and send it to him at work ;)
