Ever since my daughter was a tiny baby she was fascinated by the books on our shelves (we've got a lot of them). Whenever she cried, I would bring her over to the bookshelves and she would stop and sometimes she'd even fall asleep.
We got her a bookshelf of her own and filled it with all the books I got at my baby shower (my mom had everyone bring their favorites and filled a big treasure chest with them). She liked looking at all those books too.
One day, when she was about three months old, I thought I'd really rock her world. I brought her to Borders bookstore. She smiled and cooed and gurgled.
But the funny thing is, she never actually liked to "read" the books. She just liked to look at them. If I opened one to read to her, she looked away. But that was months ago and she was probably just too young. Now that she's into looking inside books, we read all the time. Here are some of her favorites:
Where is Baby's Belly Button? by Karen Katz. My daughter loves this book because it has all kinds of flaps that she can lift and peek under. She is so proud of herself when she does it. Karen Katz has also written several other fun lift-the-flap books, including Where is Baby's Birthday Cake and Peek-a-Baby.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. We have it in a supersized version, so at one time, it was the same size as the baby. She loves the big colorful illustrations. The picture of the big fat caterpillar and the big beautiful butterfly are her favorites.
What Makes a Rainbow? by Betty Ann Schwartz; illustrated by Dona Turner. A different color ribbon appears as you turn each page until you have all the colors of the rainbow. The last page is a pop-up rainbow. Who doesn't love a pop-up rainbow?
What are your baby's favorite books?
For my son it's the SKippyjon Jones books. For my daughter is Sandra Boynton's Bellybutton Book and Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?
-The Very Hungry Caterpillar (Grandma even got her a TVHC ornament for Christmas)
-Little Scholastic's Welcome Winter
-The Shape of Things
-Baby Einstein - Mirror Me
We have a lot of books, in fact yesterday I was looking at our books and decided we might have too many. Our two bookcases are overflowing! A few favorites: The Monster Who Loved Books (pop-up book), I Love You Stinky Face (for a boy), Baby's First Bible, My Shimmery Fun Time Book (first words), and Tigger (shaped cardboard book). Oh and a classic: Boom Chika Boom Boom!
We're just starting to get into books, so he doesn't really have a favorite yet. I highly recommend, though, the Pigeon books: Don't Let The Pigeon Drive The Bus, Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog, etc. I've had pigeons my whole life (quirky, I know), so as I joke I bought the series for my nephew. He LOVED, and still loves, them, so I bought them for my other nephews, who also adorre them! They're sitting patiently on my baby's shelf now as well...I can't wait to read them to him!
we also have a few by karen katz and that same rainbow book! we recieved the latter as a gift and my toddler loves it. her favorites are goodnight moon, sheep in a jeep and baby angels. we have been so bad about reading to our 2nd- the baby. he did receive a few "boy themed" books for Christmas.

We are fans of many of those books as well - but I wanted to add my baby's all time favorite - "Is your mama a llama". She' s 7 months old and giggles as each page turns. She loves this book!
