Newborn Sleep: A Bassinet, Crib or Cradle?

Maybe you've already made the decision to co-sleep with your baby. But other moms who will be putting their new babies in their own beds often wrangle with what's better -- a bassinet, a cradle, or straight to the crib.

But with a newborn the crib just seems so ... big. Not cozy at all. At least that's the way I felt.

KaetlinC was even wondering if it's safe to put a newborn straight in the crib.

Tons of moms in the Advice for Moms thread said they put their babies into the crib from day one with no problem. It is perfectly safe as long as the crib is safe (in good condition; without gaping slats that can catch a head or limb; no bumpers, pillows, loose blankets or stuffed animals) and you plug in a baby monitor if the crib is in another room.

Love these fitted baby sheets in pretty patterns from Ella & Otto (and no, not just cause Otto was the name I picked for my son Leo, but it got ousted by my husband). I love these sheets cause they're cute, and not all fitted baby sheets are so well-patterned and nice. Trust me.

These fitted crib sheets run 16 GBP or about $26 each.

Crying it Out: The Doctors Debate

cio cry it out baby to sleep

How do I get my newborn to sleep? That's the question on every new mom's mind. And if she voices it, she's likely to get an earful. Basically it seems like there are two main opinions on how to get a baby to sleep: You can let them cry it out until they drift off on their own (CIO) or you can soothe them until they fall asleep.

No one could put poor Humpty

back together!

Mr. Cafe Suzanne and I are hoping to raise our daughter to be bilingual so we've bought her a lot of French music. Many of the songs have been sung to babies in France for generations, and my husband grew up hearing them. But after singing them to our daughter recently, he was a bit taken aback.

What's Your Baby's Comfort Toy?

December 19, 2008 at 10:59 AM by Cafe Suzanne - Comments (11)

I was listening to a radio program about traveling with babies, and one of the tips was to always bring a "copy" of your baby's comfort toy or blanket. The idea being, that if one got lost, you'd have another one on hand. Crisis averted. Baby never need know the truth. Ever since hearing that I've been on the lookout for an exact replica of my baby's chosen object of comfort. And not just for traveling. We could lose it any time, any where.

Protect Your Baby from SIDS with an Egg

October 29, 2008 at 10:14 AM by Cafe Suzanne - Comments (6)

Meet the Grobag Egg. It can keep your baby safe while he sleeps, according to its Australian designers. Here's how: Research shows that crib death can result when your infant gets overheated, so this nifty little egg alerts you to temperatures in your baby's room.

Basically it's a digital thermometer that changes color based on the room's temperature. If the room is within recommended temperatures, the egg glows yellow; if the room drops below them, the egg turns blue; if the room gets too warm, the egg turns orange; and if it gets dangerously warm, the egg turns red. What a good egg!

Does anyone have a Grogbag Egg? Do you like it? If you don't have one, would you buy it?

There's nothing worse than when your baby is upset and nothing seems to calm him so I really felt for mommyxina2008 last night. She posted a cry for help in The CafeMom Newcomers Club because she could not get her screaming baby to sleep and she was exhausted. All the moms chimed in with some really good advice.
