Homemade Hair Spray

I hate the way my hairspray smells, but I love the way it works. I used to use Aussie, which reminds me of grape Dimetapp. But that smell takes me back to high school, so I don't use it anymore.
I don't use a lot of hairspray, just a little to
control my bangs and give my locks a little texture. When I was talking to my sister about this, she told me that a friend of hers makes her own hairspray with lemons!
You will need:
- 2 lemons (or 2 oranges if you have dry hair)
- 4 cups of water
- A clean spray bottle
It's as easy as 1, 2, 3!
- Chop up the lemons (or oranges) in six pieces on a cutting board and add everything to boiling water (seeds, juice, and all).
- Simmer for one hour, then strain so no pulp, seeds, or skin enters the spray bottle.
- Let cool in refrigerator before use.
Since it's all natural, it's great for kids hair, too. This will keep for a week without refrigeration. And it smells great!

sounds like it would dry out your hair and possibly cause a lightning of color. I am all about homemade concoctions but this one just doesn't sound right
use the dove brand. no smell & light hold...works for me anyway.
yeah it sounds like a lightening mix you would use in the summer to me.. I use to make it but I just never boiled it.. I live in florida
I agree with everyone else I used to use lemons to lighten my hair, I guess it could hold in place because it's sticky when it dries. it's definitely different i would have never thought of it for hairspray.

Buggs might get in your hair.
I tried homemade hairspray about 30 years ago when my first two kids were little, I was divorced from my first husband, and living with my sister. We were broke but she needed hairspray for those wonderful 1979/1980 hairstyles. So we put our heads together and put a little sugar in a spray bottle with water. Spritzed in on and it worked like a charm! Trouble is, she had to walk to work...in Texas...in the summer...the height of bee and fly season. She was the hit of the nature kingdom. She started out walking but had to run to work to escape the attack. She came home after her shift furious with me for MY idea! I laugh every time I remember that day. And that will probably keep me from ever trying to make homemade hairspray.

Seems to me it would attract bees in the summer time but I am going to try it any way. Can't hurt since it is winter right? Thanks for the info!

Hmmm... Can't think of how this concoction would hold your hair in place - which is what hairspray is supposed to do! However, it would be safe, good and cheap to use on your hair in the summer for "streaking" or lightening up your hair!! I would definitely refridgerate it, tho!! I'd advise you just to get the cheapest (unscented) hairspray available if you must use hairspray. Or learn to use a tad of pomade to hold your bangs together - which would give you good texture, too.
