So I spent the entire summer preparing my emerging big boy (4 1/2) for kindergarten. Countless readings of "The Night Before Kindergarten," countless writings of our name L-O-R-E (no, babe, which way does an E go?)-N-Z-O, countless talks about making new friends, about remembering how special we are, and most of all, about how exciting homework will be.
Me, first week: So how's it going, kiddo?
Kid: Fine.
Me, second week (rummaging through the book bag for homework): So how's it going, kiddo? Where's your homework?
Kid: Shoulder shrug.
Me, third week: So how's it going, kiddo? Did Miss Teacher mention working with mommy on anything at home?
Kid: Nope.
Ever
aware of being the hyper-concerned mom who secretly
desires a parent-teacher conference everyday, I kept my silence as long
as I could. Maybe they are waiting until the kids get really adjusted,
I reasoned. Not so much. After three weeks of waiting for the big
homework explosion, I finally ask Miss Teacher what's up. "Oh I know,"
she says, empathizing with my puzzled look. "But the school
has a policy of no homework for kindergartners." Huh?! After comparing
notes with other K-mommies, I'm starting to realize that
every school approaches the homework thing differently and every mom
has her own expectations. I've heard mothers complain about too much
homework, but none? Mom kayce14 says, "Some homework is fine
but it should be fairly simple and take no more than a half an hour and
should not be every night." I like this take. But perhaps no homework
makes sense--wouldn't want to overwhelm junior at the start of his
school career. I guess. What do you think about your kid's homework situation?
My son was in Kindergarten last year and he had homework Tuesday thru Thursday. He was sent home with a packet that had Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays homework listed. Sometimes he had to read one night, or I read to him, some was working on his site words, some were dittos, like coloring, or answering questions. Everything was pretty simple and it was nice to have a homework routine every week. That really prepared him for the 1st grade where he has homework Tues-Thurs again but a bit more and the routine is a bit different but a routine or schedule is great!
My kindergartener only gets homework on Wednesdays. And it is simple. She just has to cut our pictures (or draw them) of things that start with the letter of the week. That's it.
My oldest only got homework once a week in kindergarten, too, which was just some simple worksheet as I recall. My son was in kindergarten last year and I thought it was great how they did kindergarten homework (since they go to school full day) then he got into 1st grade and now it is insane. He has 3 pages of homework a day, plus 10 minutes of reading, plus study 13 vocab words (he can't read yet) and remember 12 spelling words by Friday. It takes him over 2 hours to do his homework every day (sometimes longer) and his day always ends in tears and frustration. It's pretty sad. All he does is homework, chores, dinner and bed every day.
my child gets homework packets. but i also had done a DOLLAR TREE visit and picked up cheapy little abc and 123 books and Kinder math.. no sense waiting till they are behind!! my special needs son already is behind because his brain is different.. but no sense in waiting...i am PRO ACTIVE thats what you should think of it as!! LOL!!!
I've always used workbooks, free worksheets from online, or educational websites (my favorites are Starfall & Literactive for my kids when they were in preschool and during the summer so they don't lose what they've learned. There are also some great story-reading sites out there. Tumblebooks is my favorite and you can reach it through one of our local library websites. Click here and then scroll down to the bottom and click on Tumblebooks. Hope you and your kids all enjoy this as much as we do!
my daughter started preschool and she gets home work once a week. it is simple but she still have things to work on. She is in head start. she is working on her name in school and at home too. i even volunteer in her class and she is doing very well.
my daughter gets sent home a homework packet on mondays and on the front it has what she has to do for what day so she gets homework monday through sunday and most days there are two pages of homework for her to do, i like it because she has a disability and it takes her a while to learn things and having homework helps out and reminds her of what she did that day in school, each page is a reflection of what they did that day, if you have any comments or questions email me. thanks
I have a Kindergartner and she gets homework on Mondays and it needs to be back by Thursday. It is very simple stuff and she enjoys doing it. I do think that some of the expectations at my daughters school are a little out there but I think it is just supposed to challenge them, and make them more then ready for next year.
My twins are in first grade and they rarely had homework in Kindergarten. Now they are in first grade and they STILL don't have any homework! I kind wish there was SOMETHING, but I know to be careful what I ask for, or I may regret it! LOL!!!

You sound like me. My kindergartner's homework is reading with me 15 minutes a night. Once a week or less, she'll have a letter bag in which she has to place 3 small household objects that start with the letter of the week. Vary rarely has anything else come home. Monday's folders come home and I scour through them looking for something! LOL. My oldest is in 6th grade, middle school, and has homework in every subject every night, sometimes taking up to 2 hours. And she's gifted so I can't imagine how long it takes some children to get through. On that end it seems like too much.
