I Hurt Him By Accident

In the absolute worse case-scenarios, like a mom backing up her car over a kid, etc., obviously there is an extreme level of guilt when you know that it was you who hurt your child.

But even in not so extreme cases--the everyday scenarios--accidentally hurting a child can leave you feeling horrible. An anonymous mom asked, "Have you ever hurt your child really bad?" Her 4-year-old son was throwing a tantrum and when she went to pick him up to take him to his room, he kicked and she dropped him--on his face!

I'm not sure who I hurt for more: the kid with the split lip, or mom, who is now trying to convince her child that she didn't do it on purpose (so that he likes her again one day), when it was his tantrum that got them in this mess in the first place. Just today my sometimes entirely-too-fresh-mouthed-kid, talked back to me in a way that made me want to take his head off--but instead I gave him the silent treatment. In the grocery store. Well, the crazy tantrum followed, but ever in silent mode, I coolly reached over him to get some cake icing from a shelf. CRASH! The icing came tumbling down on his head! He screams. Now I'm cuddling him and feeling terrible and praying security doesn't come to the rescue. Grrrr, what they do for attention, I tell you.

Have you ever mistakenly hurt your child?

My daughter started throwing a fit at the table one day, and tossed herself to the side so hard, her chair tipped.  I tried to catch her and sorta missed.  I caught her face and ended up blacking her eye.

I was trying to keep my son from hurting himself during a tantrum and ended up scratching the hell out of his back with my fingernails!

Every now and then I take an early afternoon nap on the bed with my son, and I forgot that he had just learned to lift his head and teeter back and forth to turn. He was screaming and I reached groggily for his pacifier when he lifted his head and I poked him very hard in the eye. I jumped up and cradled him in my arms, begging his forgiveness. He was so shocked he froze and became very silent, which made me even more terrified. Then he let out the most infuriating shriek and I've never been happier to hear him cry.

my son was playing on the steps at grandmas cabin one summer and i was behind him. he began to fall backwards and naturally I caught him but apparently I caught him too hard and he ended up with finger tip sized bruses from every finger of mine on his back right under the arms. I felt so bad he didnt ware any more tanktops till they were gone cause once we were out and someone saw then and I was soooo embarassed. I explained the story but the person gave me that yeah right look.

I did not believe my son when he said his stomach hurt.  I thought he was saying it because he did not want to spend the day with my G-ma.  My Mom called off work and took him to the hospital and he had to have an emergency appendectomy!  I felt just awful!  He still tells the story of how he would have died if it was not for his G-ma!  I always feel really bad about it!

My son was throwing a fit one day and I went to grab him and put him in timeout, and he slipped out of my hand and fell face first on the floor...I felt so bad! So, he got out of being in trouble because I accidentally hurt him...poor kid! I'm sure he didn't mind skipping timeout, though, while I cuddled with him instead. =] stinker, lol!

Katie...

My son is only three months old, so the worst thing I've done to him is cut his fingers while going for his nails, and I still want to die!

My sister once gave my nephew a bloody nose by accident and he told her he was going to tell the police--kids are scary these days!

when my youngest was brand new, some friends called and asked to meet us at red robin for lunch so they could see our new baby!  I am sure they were trying to be considerate by not coming into our (probably very messy!) home during a chaotic time...but seriously, a newborn and a toddler in a restaurant?? :)  so while we are having lunch, my son starts to cry and I move to give him my finger to suck on (he never took a pacifier!) and I jabbed him in the roof of the mouth with my finger nail!!!!!!!!  instead of crying, he clamped his little mouth shut as tight as he could. I wanted to cry!

I broke another kid's collar bone. I was walking with him on the playground (I was a preschool teacher) taking him in for a diaper change. I stepped in a hole and twisted my ankle. I knew I was going to fall, I had a split second to choose, fall on him, or let go and let him fall to the ground. I let go. If I hadn't, I would have fallen on top of him for sure, and it would have been much worse. It took me a long time to get over it. His mom called me from the ER. I expected to get cussed out. (I probably would have flipped out if the roles were reversed) She assured me that he was alright, and asked me if my ankle was okay. She sent ME a get well card the next day! I brought him balloons, a stuffed animal, and McDonalds. I felt SOOOO bad about it!

My daughter is almost ten months old, and the worst that's happened so far is bumping her head against the wall from walking too close to the wall. The first night she was home from the hospital she needed her nails cut and we didn't have any baby cutters. So my husband decided to use our nail clippers and he got the end of her finger. She was bleeding but not for very long, and she didn't even cry the little toughie!
