There is no more debate. Exposure to media is having an overall negative impact on children of all ages. A report reviewed over 173 studies about the effects of media consumption on children and found that there is a strong connection between health issues and media exposure.
What is media? This article on the groundbreaking report in the New York Times makes it clear: "In a clear majority of those studies more time with television, films, video games, magazines, music and the Internet was linked to rises in childhood obesity, tobacco use and sexual behavior. A majority also showed strong correlations — what the researchers deemed “statistically significant associations” — with drug and alcohol use and low academic achievement."
It's hard, moms. But we've got to cut the TV off. Is your house on media overload?

I know I don't watch more than a few hours of tv a week--I absolutely hate the fact that nothing gets done while the tv is on, but my husband is tied to tv. As soon as he wakes up on the weekends and as soon as he comes home from work the tv is on. Our boys sit down and watch some, but last year my husband added cable to the upstairs room as well and the boys are totally tuned into the thing.
It's hard to set an example, if you can see what I mean. Any suggestions?

Hubby and I only have a tv downstairs (which hardly ever gets used) and one in our room which we only watch. Once in a blue moon, I'll let my boys watch kid movies but that's IT. No TV (we have chosen not to get cable here), no video games allowed either. They stay active helping me with housework all day.
