Kids and Prescription Drugs

December 17, 2008 at 2:00 PM by Cafe Kierna - Comments (2)

Alarming news. After two Wisconsin 8th graders were busted for trying to sell prescription drugs in their middle school, police there issued a warning to parents everywhere about the dangers of children having access to certain prescription and over-the-counter drugs.

Police have noticed a steep increase in the number of cases involving children stealing their parents prescription and over-the-counter medications to either get high off of or sell. Kids crush and snort, or swallow many of the drugs including: Adderall and Adderall XR, Ritalin, Methylphenolate, Oxycodone, Percocet, and Vicodin.

The sale or use of these drugs could amount to felony charges, warn police, underscoring a hard truth--the repercussions for kids abusing prescription drugs are not just health-related.

Do your kids have access to your prescription drugs?

I would never allow my kids access, but as a pharmacy technician, I know that there are many people that allow their older adhd kids access to their OWN medications, and those are the ones who can sell them easily..of course you have to understand that in accordance to HIPAA laws, we cannot legally withold a child's medication from them if they come to pick it up themselves.. I have known teen who doctor shop to get anti anxiety medications, adhd meds, adnpain pills, and the dr has to by law not inform the parent of the kid says not to...so they are getting a lot of this stuff on their own.

Cafe...

Wow. That's startling. Are these laws state or federal?
