Flu Shot: Did Your Child Get One?

December 22, 2008 at 8:14 PM by Cafe Kierna - Comments (19)

The hawk is out where I live, and in a lot of the rest of the country too. These cold temperatures can be fun when you think about it in terms of hot chocolate and snowmen, but when you think about flu season (sick days, throwing up, chills) um, not so much.

Flu shots continue to be controversial, with some moms swearing by them and others too afraid to roll up their kid's sleeve. How about you?

I voted no. My daughter has never had a flu shot or the flu. A flu shot is not a guarantee, and to me the risks outweigh the benefits. My daughter is not in daycare, and has been BF for over 1 1/2 years, so those 2 things are in her favor. I only vaccinate for things I deem to be necessary.

i never thought i would be a vax advocate but my son was born 6 wks early, in the nicu for about 3 weeks and qualified for synagist (a monthly shot for flu prevention, super expensive, about 1000 per shot, so over the flu season the first year he cost my insurance at least 7000 not counting the price of nurses to administer) BUT it might have saved them in the long run because he has never had a flu, didnt get RSV, didnt ever need to go to the hosiptal,  really could have saved hislife, idk.... so yes he is 3 now and completely healthy but it really isnt a choice for me, i want a healthy kid and for us it is the right choice.

Tanya...

I have decided no more vaxes for my family! Especially not the flu shot. It is second only to the chicken pox vaccine in the level of ridiculousness!

Yes, yes, yes! This year, my son is not going be dreadfully ill. This year, I am not going to contemplate taking him to the ER at 3am b/c he is running a 105 fever. We are done with flu. I am going to get a flu vax too.

They litterally have hundreds of strains of flu and they pick one of three or four to give a shot for! Its mostly for the money!!! The cause long term problems anyways!!!

My son was born full-term 8lbs 3.7 oz but even that did not stop him from getting RSV--That very tiny little man was very sick-- as a mother I believe that we are responsible for the well being of our children and I vacinate  that is my choice. My son also has severe asthma so if there is any chance that I can help avoid this situation of him getting so sick that it is in his best interest--he also receive the meningitis shot. I know that there are a lot of parents that do not want to vaccinate or get this type of shots-- I respect them and their decisions. So please respect my decision.

My daughter gets vaccinated for everything that is recommended by her Pediatrician.  The flu shot is one of those, so she got it.  Kids in the US still die from symptoms caused by the flu.  I'm not taking that chance.
