What Kids Really Think of Grandparents

rocking chair, grandparentsIf you are fortunate enough to have helpful, doting parents and/or in-laws in your children's lives (Hi Mom-Mom and G-Dad!), you will get a kick out of this article, "Wanna Know Who Grandparents Are--Ask a Cool Kid."

According to the article, the US Census bureau reports that over 1.3 million children are entrusted to their grandparents everyday. I'd bet it's way more than that! Blogger Lorette Young, a grandma who runs the site DailyScrewUps offered this hilarious (excerpted) list, "Who are Grandparents" –compiled from a class of 8-year-old children. It will make you think twice before you ever complain about something your kid's grandmother/father didn't do perfectly. In the eyes of kids, grandparents rock, baby!

  • Grandparents are a lady and a man who have no little children of their own – but they like other people’s.
  • A grandfather is a man, and a grandmother is a lady!
  • When they take us for walks, they slow down past things like pretty leaves and caterpillars.
  • They show us and talk to us about the colors of the flowers and also why we shouldn’t step on ‘cracks.’
  • They don’t say, ‘Hurry up.’
  • Usually grandmothers are fat but not too fat to tie your shoes.
  • They wear glasses and funny underwear.
  • They can take their teeth and gums out.
  • Grandparents don’t have to be smart.
  • They have to answer questions like ‘Why isn’t God married?’ and ‘How come dogs chase cats?’
  • When they read to us, they don’t skip. They don’t mind if we ask for the same story over again.
  • Everybody should try to have a grandmother, especially if you don’t have television because they are the only grownups who like to spend time with us.
  • They know we should have snack time before bed time, and they say prayers with us and kiss us even when we’ve acted bad.

Do your children adore their grandparents?

My parents live 2 hours away, so they don't get to see the kids daily, but we do see them at least a couple times a month, and the boys love it!  They can't wait for their visits!!!

My MIL lives 15 minutes away from us, and we see her a few times a week.  She watches the boys for me 2 nights a week when I go to school, since DH is still at work when I have to leave.  And we spend all day Sunday with her.  The boys adore her!

My FIL lives in Mexico, and we haven't met him yet ... ever!  DH and him have never had a good relationship, but they're trying to change that, and so we will be meeting him for the first time on Friday!  We leave for Mexico tomorrow!  I sure hope that the boys love him as much as they love their other grandparents!

Sweet...

I'm a grandma of an 8-year-old, and I have tears in my eyes reading this. I am sooooo glad I didn't kill my son when he was a teenager!  I love spending time with this child, and my son and daughter-in-law look the other way when I don't do things just the way they would. I get as much or more from our visits as she does, and in the process, I feel I'm able to help my son and his wife as they work, and she attends school, and they just try to get by. I never had any relatives near-by to help when my children were small, so I help them as much as I can.

My mom's parents and my dad's parents are all still  alive.  I have lost one step'grandfather and I still miss him after 12 years or so.  I knew both of my great grandmothers and miss one of them so much after all of these years.  She meant the world to me and I wish my kids could have been able to know her.  I'll never meet another person like her.  My kids aren't as close to their grandparents as I was but we are hoping to move closer to my mom in the near future and maybe that will change.

"I am sooooo glad I didn't kill my son when he was a teenager!"

^ LOL!!!

I live way too far from my parents ( I'm in AZ and they're in MA)... If I won a million dollars, I would move them into a nice house nearby, or move into a nice house near them. It makes me sick that my daughter won't get to see them all the time... They were fantastic parents, so I know they'll be amazing grandparents to her.

My daughter adores my Mom and my Grandma! She was a total Great Grandpas girl too but he past away this past New Years Eve, it's been hard. I guess she's lucky to have so many Grandparents around.

My daughter loves loves loves her Grandma and Papaw. We see them fairly often. She loves to read with Grandma and is enamored with her papaw. I think my dad yelled at her once for hitting...it was like he broke her heart!
