Nannies may be the next group of workers who need a bail out.
CNN just covered a trend that is growing with the recession: child care cut backs.
From the report: The economic booms during the late 1990s and from 2004 to 2007 made it possible for more middle-class and upper middle-class American families to employ nannies, said Genevieve Thiers, founder of Sittercity.com.
"Now that we're back in recession, families are unfortunately having to cut back on their nannies' hours or unfortunately having to let go of their nannies, and it's not a good situation."
But while nannies working for upper-middle and high income families are getting laid off and losing hours in some cases, for working class families the need for child care still abounds. In some cases, even more so as an increasing number of moms are forced to work outside of the home in order to make ends meet. The question is, even with additional jobs, will parents be able to afford care?
CNN and Sittercity.com conducted a survey and found:
Have you gone back to work because of the recession? Have you hired or fired a nanny/babysitter because of the economy?
my other question would be: how many children are actually LATCH KEY kids like i was in the 70's?? there ARE children out there who are and it is illegal now, but do some HAVE TO do it because of the recession??
I work for a child care resource and referral agency in Michigan, one of the hardest hit states, and our licensed child care providers are going out of business right and left. My son's provider lost 4 kids in one week and has had to lay off her assistant. More and more parents are turing to unlicensed/unregulated care for their children.
Lost my job too I was a licensed daycare provider and three of my kids parents gave me notice in the same week. I still have one boy but only part time and I'm not even trying to get new kids. I just want another job.
Wow, I'm so glad that my child is now a teenager. I was a nanny before marrying & having her, and there were several agencies for me to choose from locally. The demand was so high, and I was paid pretty well. I can't imagine trying to be in that job field now, scary!
I am glad I don't have the bill of daycare right now, but I feel for all those moms without a choice right now AND the daycares/businesses dependent upon working people for their income such as childcare. I bothers me and scares me, as I do not have the opinion of-what doesn't effect me, blah, blah, blah. Everything effects everyone somehow. God Bless!
I am home daycare provider and one of my regulars has scaled back from full time to only 3 days a week :( We are holding out till we find out the child's mom gets promoted to full time in the summer, if not I might be looking at something part time in the evenings. While taking the kids to the park today, I noticed a long time running daycare has a for sale/lease sign on the front door...they've been closed down as well.
I had to leave a career that I loved in order to stay home and take care of my son because childcare is so expensive, it just wasn't worth it to me to work. Before quitting my job I tried to get my son into a home daycare and she didn't have room! I was shocked :-( This was only about 2 months ago.
