Autistic Scout Saves Teacher

I love hearing stories like these. Not stories about people choking -- I'd never wish that on anyone. But stories about the heroes who save them from dying, especially when they are children with special needs.

It reminds us that they can do anything and everything that typically functioning kids do.

Here's a clip of Kyle Forbes, an autistic child who saved his teacher from choking on an apple by delivering the Heimlich maneuver he learned in Cub Scouts.

Gina Gallagher and Patty Konjoian, moms of special needs kids and co-authors/bloggers of Shut Up About Your Perfect Kid!, created this funny but all-too-real spoof of what happens at a Team Meeting.

Gina has had plenty of experience with these meetings, a sort of progress sit-down with several of your child's teachers. Her 14-year-old autistic daughter, Katie, has language-based learning disabilities and attends public school.

When my girlfriend unexpectedly had her baby at only 25 weeks gestation, every seemed to happen so fast and in slow motion at the same time. One minute she was pregnant and in the mall, the next, she was a mother. Her sweet little girl was barely 2 pounds and we desperately feared for her life. Doctors said for good reason. Extremely premature births (children born below 26 weeks gestation) have higher death rates.
