Should Celebrities Get to Cut in Line?

June 6, 2009 at 8:02 AM by Cafe Suzanne - Comments (10)

should celebrities wait in linesA friend of mine was once standing in line at a popular ice cream stand in L.A. According to his story, along came a certain Australian actress who attempted to walk to the front of the very long line.

The people who had been waiting went crazy—not because there was a real live "A-list" celebrity in their midst, but because they expected her to wait in line just like everyone else.

The actress used the classic line "Don't you know who I am?" Everyone did, but no one cared. They hissed and booed and put up such a stink, the ice cream stand employees told her she had to wait in line.

This happens fairly often in New York City too. I've seen certain stars cut to the front of long lines at popular restaurants even when it was clear they didn't have a reservation.

I'm not sure when our culture decided that celebrities should be treated like royalty. Stores close for their personal shopping pleasure, drinking-age laws are overlooked, and more.

To me, actors, musicians, and reality T.V. stars are simply entertainers—generally very well paid ones. It's not like they're saving lives or risking their own to protect others or engaging in some other noble profession. I think they can stand in line just like us.

Well, maybe with some slight differences. For example, the actress who wanted an ice cream could have offered to pay for everyone's or she could have done a little song and dance number to keep people entertained while they waited. That would have been very thoughtful.

What do you think? Should celebrities get to cut to the front of long lines or should they have to wait like the rest of us?

Yes they should.  They're not superheros, they just make movies (most of which stink).  My opinion.

They should totally wait. I think those who SHOULD get to cut would be people like police and EMT's and firefighters. That way they actually get their snacks/meals instead of getting a call in the middle of the line and then have to do without until next break.  Celebrities need to realize they are just. like. us.

Ditto to Emmy_Dollfaces reply about the police, EMT's and firefighters! They are expected to be in a hurry! But, all in all, I wouldn't make a fit about anyone cutting in line. There's other things in life to be concerned about.  Now, I do have an issue with celebrities thinking that they are royalty or something. Seems like when I watch TMZ, many many times they act like being famous is a nuissance for them....well, sooo sorry to tell ya's, but, ya know what?!?!?  You are payed crazy well! So, let's act like big kids! But, yeah, celebrity or not, they should wait and all, but, I really wouldn't waste my time with being angry over it.

There's no reason they shouldn't have to wait. They get enough perks.

Celebrities need to remember that WE are responsible for their paychecks and lifestyle. If they can't be mature enough to wait in line and show class toward the public, then we should respond by boycotting their products no matter what they are (movies, CDs, etc).

They're people.  Just because they've been on the news or in movies doesn't make them more important than anyone else.
They get a superiority complex, and sometimes people DO encourage it... but if I ever had a celebrity try to cut me in line or something of the sort, I'd be asking if they were anxious to get to the front because they wanted to pay for the product for everyone behind them... and if not, they can wait like everyone else.

I agree with Emmy, by the way.  I'd totally let on-duty paramedics, EMTs and cops cut in line for the reason she gave - they can be called BACK at any second, so the sooner they get whatever they're in there for, the more likely they are to actually get to eat it.

Awww, I'm glad people agree. My dad, FIL were/are police and my hubby is in school to become one now. I remember people getting mad at my dad because the people at the restaraunts would get him his food first. I always explained to them that if he didn't eat then he wouldn't get to until he got home late that night unless he ate a snack in his car. When I worked at Cpt. D's, we had a group of EMT's that always came in and I would slip their ticket in front of others so they could eat before they got a call. It just always irked me that people would get mad at that.

"It's not like they're saving lives or risking their own to protect others or engaging in some other noble profession. I think they can stand in line just like us." - took the thoughts right out of my head.

I totally agree!  They should be made to wait!

I frequented a nightclub back in New Orleans where there was a strict dress code (no jerseys, t-shirts and tennis shoes).  Well not only were the local athletes not expected to stand in line, but they got in wearing whatever they wanted to.  They got VIP treatment and got to drink all of the expensive alcohol for free!

There are a lot more worthwhile people in the world I'd let cut in line before a celebrity!
