I checked out the Modern Family pilot episode this weekend on Hulu.com. It's pretty funny. I'll be tuning in.
The new Modern Family sitcom revolves around the life and times of one extended family. Ed O'Neill (of Married With Children fame) plays Jay, the crabby patriarch married to a much-younger Colombian woman named Gloria (Sofia Vergara), who has a young son named Manny. We also drop in on the two households of Jay's extended family: grown daughter Claire (Julie Bowen, formerly of Boston Legal, LOST, and Ed) and her family, which includes her husband Phil (Ty Burrell) and their three children and also Jay's grown son Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and his partner Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) who have just adopted baby Lily from Vietnam.
At first I was a little worried about the TV show's Office-style fake documentary thang, not-so-fresh idea of the "modern family" makeup, and trite sitcom stereotypes, but I gave it a chance. The show's witty writing and small dose of Arrested Development-esque quirk saved it for me.
Worth the best chuckles: Phil's monologue on why he's a "hip dad" and the ongoing storylines that prove he simply isn't (like how he knows all the High School Musical dance routines much to his kids' chagrin and think WTF stands for "why the face?"). Phil and Claire's scheduling on the family calendar of when to shoot their son Luke with a BB gun, his punishment for shooting his sister with it in the first place. New dad Cameron's dramatic Lion King presentation of baby Lily to the family.
The pilot's worth a watch and I'm on for the next episode.
Modern Family is on ABC, Wednesday nights at 9pm.

I watched and was laughing the whole time! I gave it a shot because i used to watch Married with Children all the time and wanted to see Al Bundy back in action. My favorite scenes were the Lion King presentation of the new baby and when Phil was trying to convince his daughter's boyfriend of how tough he is, then he threw his back out and the boy had to carry him to the couch!
