Diet Coke and Mentos Experiment: Thank You Mythbusters!

If your kids are younger, here's a peek into what you can look forward to once they get to school! If you are a mom of a tween or teen, I'm sure this experiment has been performed in your house or at a neighbor's home. The popular Discovery Channel show, Mythbusters, features various experiments every week. One of the most popular episodes show viewers how the combination of Mentos candies and Diet Coke results in a huge explosion! Fun! Unless it's in your kitchen. The Mythbusters team has inspired my kids to perform other experiments (in the name of science, of course). The picture you see here is from my daughter's quest to find out if Peeps candies would make it through a vacuum. Good times. Have you had the Mentos-Diet Coke explosion at your house? Talk to me!

There is actually a kit for the Diet Coke and Mentos thing, not marketed by MythBusters or Discovery, though. It has a loader for the top of the bottle, and includes the Mentos! (I saw it tonight at Michael's, a craft store, which is why I thought it was funny to find this tonight!) I love MythBusters, but my kids don't watch it much, they are 6 and I'm scared to think what ideas they would get!
Oh, and re: the Peeps in the micro... we figured that out with regular marshmallows when I was a kid. If you microwave them and stretch them, they make a taffy-like thing. It's like Fluff but stiffer. LOL!!!

Well, Mythbusters is my kids favorite show. No we have not had the mentos experiment, as far as I am aware. We have though had the how long before a peep blows up in a microwave experiment. Apparently when the peep gets hot it expands. The key is to stop the microwave before the point of explosion. This by the way was taught to my kids by the next door neighbor who was babysitting at the time.
