Students at an elementary school in California take a cooking class every other week where they learn basic cooking skills and nutrition. Many of these kids are used to eating junk food at home; but in class they try (often for the first time) healthy items like tomato salsa, hummus, and vegetable stew.
But is school the appropriate place to learn about food?

I love Jennifer Leal's "About Me" section on her blog, Savor the Thyme: "A New Englander who discovered her passion for Science at a young age and her passion to be a Stay at Home Mom and Foodie a bit later."
Want to see her kitchen? I thought so...

How do you get your kids to eat their veggies?
Alison from Cooking With Friends posted this great recipe for Peek-A-Boo Pasta, which her kids love. It's so named because the colorful veggies "hide" inside the tubes of pasta and "peek out" at you just before you take a bite!

Today at breakfast, I couldn't wait to sink my teeth into one of the strawberry muffins I had made the night before (here's the recipe; just 160 calories each). I don't snack after 7 p.m., so it took a good measure of resistance to step away from the cooling rack with them sitting there hot out of the oven.
When I finally took my first bite today, expecting mildly sweet, airy perfection, I got ... bland. Blech!
It dawned on my pretty quickly. As I was mixing the dry ingredients, I forgot to add the sugar. A half-cups' worth, enough to turn my mouth-watering strawberry muffins into mediocre strawberry bread.

This kitchen disaster story from Proudmomof82008 cracks me up!
"My 2- and 3-year-old daughters decided they wanted to surprise me and make a cake. They went into the kitchen and proceeded to make a cake in the middle of the kitchen floor. They cracked eggs, put flour in the eggs, and poured milk over into the flour and eggs. They started stirring it all together right there in the middle of the kitchen floor. No bowls used at all...just the kitchen floor! Needless to say it was a PURE mess!"
Hilarious.
Did your kids ever do something like this? What's your funniest kitchen disaster story?
