Seriously, Do You Like Turkey?

November 23, 2008 at 6:30 AM by Cafe Kristen - Comments (9)

Thanksgiving, turkeyAside from the wonderful tradition of sitting around the Thanksgiving table eating it, I'm wondering if you really like turkey. I do. Sort of. If the skin is crispy, the meat is moist, and the gravy not too greasy. You know.

Turkey is good for us, nutritionally speaking. Turkey is low in fat, high in protein and a decent source of iron, zinc, phosphorus, potassium and B vitamins. About 3 1/2 ounces of sliced breast meat only has 194 calories, and dark meat still only contains 232.

But the serious question remains...

I voted no.We always have to have ham & turkey, because I refuse to eat turkey.I think it's dry & nasty.Even when we go to my inlaw's,I offer to bring the ham so I don't get stuck.LOL.Now,when I go to my mom's she always has at least a small ham, because she knows I won't touch the turkey.

Yes, but, I love the turkey so I can have a turkey sandwich. IMO, turkey at the deli doesn't taste as good.

I like it, but once a year is plenty. I just ordered a free-range, organic, never frozen turkey that I have to pick up Monday. It will taste better, but it's a good thing my inlaws chip in to buy it. Happy Thanksgiving! (Well, maybe not for the poor turkey. I promise to cook it as well as I possibly can.)

I do not like dry turkey, but if it's moist and there's some good homemade gravy to go with it, I think it's delicious. We just went to my in-laws yesterday for an early Thanksgiving dinner, and the turkey was good. The gravy was awesome! I also buy a lot of turkey sausage and ground turkey instead of beef or pork, and I like it just fine.

Turkey is a wonderful country!  :)  Okay, okay.  Yes, I like turkey, the meat, but it HAS to be prepared properly.  If it's not, it's terrible.  If it's moist, has crispy skin, and has been prepared with the right spices and vegetables in the pan, it's divine.  Those baking bags are lovely--they reduce the cooking time, keep the bird moist, they save nearly all of the juices for amazing gravy, and they can be opened up toward the end to help ensure some crispy skin.  Also, if you're not concerned with crispy skin and a gorgeous presentation that will be carved at the table, cook the turkey upside-down in the pan!  The meaty parts will cook while sitting in the juice and this will help prevent the bird from drying out.
