Do You Know What's In Your Fast Food?

December 4, 2008 at 1:00 PM by Cafe Kristen - Comments (12)

hamburgerI go to McDonald's. And even though I'm a health nut, I go often, especially in the winter because they have a huge, clean indoor playground that saves my sanity when the kids are off from school.

This is how i justify it anyway.

Of course, we eat: Hamburger Happy Meals, Chicken Selects and the little bag of apples (without the extra calories in the yummy caramel sauce, thankyouverymuch). But would I still eat there now that I know what's in my fast food--Burger King, Wendy's and other chains included?

Researchers examined the food to find out what the animals ate. According to a recent study from Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, our fast food contains:

  • Meat--beef and poultry--from animals that were mostly fed corn to make them fat
  • Meat from animals that were raised in confinement.

What do you think? I'm not sure--I might stick to Shakes and Hot Cakes. Here's a recent CafeMom question asking which fast food chain is our favorite? So don't feel badly if you still head there sometimes. In fact, in a little poll I recently did, 36 percent of us CafeMoms have been eating a little more fast food lately because it's cheaper.

My question for you is this: Are the above reasons going to keep you from eating fast food?

StarM...

Have you seen the You tube video with the 3 1/2 yr old Happy Meal that looks fresh? The person who lugged it around to her speaking engagements said it is an excellent visual aid of what this food does in our body.

Made me ill that I ever allowed my child to eat one.

It had no mold on it, no signs of dehydrating, or decomposition. It's probaby b/c it isn't real food.

They've been enough to get me to cut back significantly.  I've heard about this before, and it's even worse than that, actually.

When I'm finished with college and life is on some normal routine again, I'm cutting fast food, and many regular restaurants, off the menu completely.  The only reason I put up with fast-food and restaurants cooking for my family now, is because I'm simply not home enough, and when I am, I'm too busy to cook.

You'd be appalled if you knew what factory farmers do to our meats - even in grocery stores.  (Try local farms or hunters if you want to avoid hormones and drugs in your meat....)

Personally, I live for fast food, and would rather have that than anything cooked at home any day. And, no, I'm not big as a barn, either.  I didn't say I could afford to, just that I'd rather.  I'm autistic, and I have a lot of food issues.

My daughter declared herself a vegetarian at age 2...not for any noble reasons; she simply hates the texture and taste of meat.  So I've always ordered her burger with the meat left off -- and also the ketchup and mustard (but with the cheese and extra onions and pickles.)

I don't approve of fast food anyway.  I don't believe it's cheaper than making meals at home at all.  I am able to make really healthy, cheap casseroles and can feed my family of 6 for less than $400 a month.  That's with having a teenager and a preteen.

My kids help me cook so I don't need a playground to entertain them. It's extremely rare that they ever go out to eat. 1 or 2x a YEAR I will take them to an all you can eat buffet, but the rule is they have to have a full plate of salads & fresh (no sauces, etc) veggies before moving onto anything else.

My kids almost never get sick, and the same goes with my husband and I.  I am a size 2 (a healthy two, mind you LOL) after 4 biological children.

1 doctor did some research not only on fast food, but on burgers and steaks, etc in general.  Every time he drew blood in a needle from someone who just recently finished a steak or hamburger or other fatty food, there was blood in the needle, but at the top was a ton of fat. The rule in our home is portion control with sweets, carbs, meats, etc, but they are free to have as much of fresh veggies I provide with dinner. BTW, the youngest heart attack on record was an 18 month old child whose mom constantly fed him McDonald's.

Acid

We don't eat fast food very often.  It makes me sick..literally.

If we need to eat and fast(my 11 year old is diabetic) we will stop at Burger King..our last resort is  Mcdonalds.

As for the mom who kept feeding her 18 month old Mcdonalds and he had a heart attack, she needs to be in jail, or at least forced to take cooking classes.

To be honest, when I first read about that in a medical journal, I thought something similar.  But then I thought, I'm sure she has been punished more than enough by losing her baby/toddler.  If you think about it, jail and cooking classes are nothing compared to losing your child.

Who knows......maybe she didn't have a good mother figure to teach her how to feed her children nutritiously.  I am a prime example of someone who had my biological mom in the home my entire childhood and she's still alive today.  BUT, she never gave me any good advice or examples EVER.  No, the reason I am the mother I am is because of the nuggets of truth my dad left me with, and because I've sought out godly women in the church over the years to help me be the best mom and wife I could possible be.  So, I don't wish harm on her.  I feel for her.

Oh and as far as sanity goes.....laughter fights insanity more than anything else. If I can rough house and play board games with my FOUR BOYS, anyone can do it.  Those playgrounds.......aren't NEARLY as clean as you think they are.  They may LOOK clean, but you know kids full of sick germs in the winter go all over them spreading viruses and germs like crazy.  No, I'd rather play with my kids at home and enjoy them while I can.  They're only under my care for a short bit, then they're gone.

Having my kids love on me, and laugh with me while we dance in the rain or have a snowball fight in the snow.....or cuddle with popcorn and a movie......is all I need to keep my sanity.

Doesn't affect us at all since we rarely go out to eat fast food.

I do not know... I just don't. I do not and can not beleive what the FDA lets go to our table, it is a shame... It is a known fact that many people have allergies, are fat/over weight and some suffer other aliments from what is being injected and fed to these animals...we do get these chemicals in our system.... small amouts but over time whos to say how much one has consumed....

I eat meat yes....but only of according to my religion..

The FDA ALWAYS lies.  I don't trust them for anything.  Shoot, even recently, they've been in the news because there is harmful things in the major brands of baby formula but they are saying to keep giving your baby the formula because that's what's best for them.  HUH??? They are also refusing to supply the names of baby formula that has been shown to be harmful.  HUH HUH???

Then again, this is the SAME FDA that has tried to lable oranges as a "medication" because they have been clinically proven to help prevent heart disease and boost your immune system.  Whatever.
