Jan. 2009 O Magazine
Today, Oprah Winfrey is coming clean about her obvious weight gain. I'll definitely tune in at 4 p.m. EST.
She's like so many of us with body weight ups and downs. And now it sounds like she has the most popular New Year's resolution: Lose weight. Fitness and diet guru Bob Greene will be on hand to help her--and all of us in the audience who plan to join in.
She's kicking off 2009 with a goal to get her body back. She's now more than 200 pounds, so she said in this month's O Magazine. There will be a slew of fitness and diet tips today and in coming episodes.
Part of me believes her weight is none of our business. But at the same time, I'm grateful that she talks about it. She makes the rest of us feel normal for sometimes being indulgent, busy and, well, fat.

I want to know what happened to her vegan trial. If she'd just go vegan, with her chefs whipping up some super healthy, yummy meals, she wouldn't struggle so much.
Anyway, I feel for her. Most people DO go up and down. I hope she finds something that works for her, both for her health and her self-esteem, since it's obvious it bothers her.
I feel for her. It's hard for the average person to lose weight, to do it and then fail in the public eye must be excruciating.
yeah but with the personal trainers that she can have and the personal chefs i don't understand why she struggles quite so much?
I've always been a tiny woman soo I can't make any comments about Lady O. But I can say I think she said part of the problem was a thyroid issue. Thyroid problems can be very difficult. I have someone in my family that suffers with thyroid.![]()
Most of us have been in her Oprah's position., I spent my life as a yoyo, then I found a program that works, lost 45 lbs. and feel fantastic. I will always have to be vigilant but I know how to maintain for all my life. We all would like to think we have a thryroid problem, truth is we need to change our lifestyle.
I'm glad she is coming out like she is. When something like this happens to someone like her who seems very "untouchable"....it makes the problem more real.
It happens to people (like me) who find it really easy to just give in instead of making other choices when it comes to food. I don't know how many times I just said, "Oh well! I'll try again after this."
Good for Oprah! I didn't tune in today. Wasn't home. I sympathize with her. Although I don't have quite as much to lose, I still keep seeing the same 20 lbs. come & go. I'm ready for a life-long plan that keeps it off for good. There's no secret. It's just finding a diet/exercise plan that fits into your own lifestyle & sticking with it. Yours may be totally different than mine. The key is to get going now & not procrastinate. Then incorporate it into your daily routine, as much as brushing your teeth or combing your hair.
It just shows that however rich or enlightened you are... you are fallible and human, and that makes me feel okay. I'm happy she's showing her vulnerabilities.. Why should she be perfect, that would be false representation, and blatant lies, and who needs more of that?????????
I saw the show and was very impressed with how honest she was. I personally think it shows that weight loss is NOT as easy as getting off your butt and not eating at Mc D's. I mean, she didn't even GAIN the 40 lbs from eating at Mc D's, she OD'd on organic blue chips and didn't exercise! And I totally agree with what she was saying about loving YOURSELF and making time for YOURSELF. It's not easy to do and when you have a weight problem, it is SO easy to hate yourself which is why I wonder if that's why weight loss surgery is so popular.

I think Oprah's story is helpful. it is a reality that most people go up and down in weight, and it is nice to see someone like Oprah be "just like me"
