My Skin is So Itchy

October 30, 2008 at 9:00 AM by Cafe Kristen - Comments (4)

puppieluv doesn't mind kissing a lizard,

but my kids do.

I was at the dermatologist's office yesterday with post-baby skin complaints. The main one is that my skin is dry and itchy. It was always dry and itchy in cold weather, but I've been scratching like Curious George since I had my third baby.

I see another Cafemom asked a similar question in the Ask an OB RN group, which looks really cool. I just applied.

Anyway, my doctor, Ellen Cunningham, M.D. in Cedar Grove, NJ, told me to sit tight. While I was pregnant and breastfeeding, my hormone levels stayed high, and my skin was more moist. But now my estrogen, progesterone and other hormones have dropped, and my skin has lost water as a result. The changes could be permanent, too. Sigh.

At least she said I could try Eucerin and plain old petroleum jelly for relief. I bought both. I also need to drink more water, which I haven't been doing. I'll let you know how it goes. In the meantime, I'll be here trying to scratch my own back until my DH gets home.

Do you have any advice for fighting dry skin?

Eucerin and petroleum jelly is exactly what I used for my daughter when she had eczema as an infant. It was the only non-prescription, steroidal thing that even came close to working for us. We'd slather on the Eucerin first, really thick, so it sat on her skin like paste. After it was absorbed, we'd grease her up with a thick layer of Vaseline. Real pretty, let me tell ya. She looked like she had a layer of lacquer over her.  It was gross and our furniture was ruined, but it helped her. Luckily, she outgrew it.

Steph...

Eucerin is the best lotion out there. I use it on all my kids. My oldest has exzema really bad. AFter trying all the prectiopion meds out there we found that it works the best. He's skin cleared up in a little over 2 weeks. That was 4 years ago it hasn't come back. But we still use the eucerin every day.
