Maine Voters Reject Gay Marriage

No doubt you've heard the news this week that Maine voters repealed a state law Tuesday that would have legalized same-sex marriage.

In May of this year, the Maine Legislature passed a law that would have legalized same-sex marriage. However, the law was put on hold after conservatives launched a petition drive to repeal it in a public referendum. Almost 53 percent of Maine voters voted to throw out the law; 43 percent voted to uphold it.
Gay marriage is currently legal in five states: Iowa, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Connecticut. Maine would have been the sixth.

I don't see how it can even be legal to vote on other people's civil rights. What the hell is wrong with this country?
I live in Maine, and I voted to support gay marriage. One of the most disappointing things about this is the fact that so much support FOR gay marriage came from within the state, and so much support AGAINST it came from other places. There literally are organizations that travel the country working (and donating massive amounts of money) against gay marriage.
FOR. Love is love, and rights are rights. Ten, Twenty, Thirty years we will be looking back at this going "how disgusting that people were denied equal rights."

Had we allowed popular voting on African American rights, they might still not be able to vote. Civil liberties shouldn't be a "majority rules" issue, especially when most people against it claim religious reasons.
