Want Cheap(er) Health Care? Be Young and Male

October 20, 2009 at 3:01 PM by Cafe Kim - Comments (0)

women sign pillsDid you know that women typically pay more than men for health care?

In most states, insurers charge women anywhere from four to 48 percent more than men of the same age. Insurers say this is because women use more health care services than men, and because any women of childbearing age could become pregnant.

Sound unfair?

Well, the practice of charging women more for health care could be eliminated under the new health care bill.

How Old Is Your Skin? Take the Pinch Test

October 1, 2009 at 7:32 AM by Cafe Cynthia - Comments (4)

baby's perfect hand

I love it when people think I'm younger than I really am. I was carded the other day in the grocery store, and it made my night! The fact that even a 60 year old looks like a 30 year old to a 15 year old is besides the point. I was carded ... yessss!

The fact is, it's all about the skin. Wrinkles and sagging can add years to your age. A lifetime of sun, eating away at the skin's precious collagen, is responsible for about 80 percent of that. The rest comes from drinking, smoking, and other generally unhealthy lifestyle habits. If that hasn't caught up with you already, it will.

Two words of advice: sunblock and antioxidants. Walnuts, red grapes, red peppers -- all help to keep your skin supple and elastic.

Take this skin elasticity test to see if your complexion is older, younger or right on target for your biological age:

Living With Your Parents: How Old Is Too Old?

August 17, 2009 at 4:33 PM by Cafe Cynthia - Comments (6)

living home as adultsShould some habits and practices have an age limit?

What CafeMoms think about people who live with their parents as adults ...

-- I moved out at 19, worked two jobs, and paid for my education and rent. I think moving out earlier made me more responsible. I have a male friend whose wife lived at home until she was almost 30, but she refuses to do any housework. I think it has something to do with her staying home so long. -- Princefan6684

-- I think once you're married or have kids it's time to grow up and move out. -- anonymous

-- It depends. My brother is 26 and lives at home. He pays rent and buys his own things. He has a little left on a large school loan to pay off and my parents are fine with him there. We also live with my parents right now (I'm 24) while we are looking at homes. Since we lost ours in a hurricane last year. But we also pay rent and buy our own things. -- SunnyJoJo

The Question That Hurts

July 21, 2009 at 7:07 AM by Cafe Cynthia - Comments (3)

infertility Some moms can't have more biological children no matter how much they'd like to. Emergency hysterectomies, infertility problems, premature menopause, or other medical issues have cut their family plans short.

Still, strangers and acquaintances inevitably ask, "So, are you going to have more kids?" Some are even presumptuous and judgemental. Without knowing any of the background, one woman at a baby shower told a childless guest with infertility issues, "You should have a baby. They are a blessing."

"When people ask me, my stomach and heart drop and my mouth gets dry," says one CafeMom in Marriage and Relationships who had a hysterectomy at 19. "I am still never prepared for the question. It literally feels like a shocking slap to the face. I usually say, 'I don't know,' because it would be awkward to say, 'I can't'. But I'm sick of feeling ashamed of it and I want to move on."

How other moms deal with this sad and difficult question:

Sunscreen FAQs

Summer Safety Guide

Sunscreen and SPF factsAnswers to the most commonly asked sunscreen questions on CafeMom, from skin cancer expert and dermatologist Barbara Gilchrest, a spokeswoman for the American Academy of Dermatology:

Do sunblocks with a higher SPF offer better protection against the cancer and wrinkle causing rays?

For everyday use April through October, in temperate climates, an SPF 15 is fine for adults and children age 1 year and older. SPF 30 or higher is a good number for people who live in the middle, southern and western areas of the country.

If you'll be in direct sun for more than an hour, especially at a beach, pond, or pool, a higher waterproof SPF product is the way to go. Extremely high SPF products (greater than 50) are more expensive and unnecessary if you're already being "sun smart."

Cafe Suzanne stopping by the Healthy Living Buzz ...

The other day, the potentially oldest woman in the world Sakhan (Sarah) Dosova turned 130. One hundred and thirty. That's a lot of candles. According to her passport (she's from Kazakhstan), Sarah was born on March 27, 1879—that's the year Thomas Edison invented the light bulb, and both Joseph Stalin and Albert Einstein were born. Sarah was married twice and has ten children (three are still alive). What's the secret to her longevity?

teeth, dentist, root canalA new survey says that 80 percent of Americans are still afraid of the dentist. More than half say that being scared keeps them from going to the dentist at all.

Annabelle holds Toast

I am in love.

Her name is Toast, and she's my 6-month-old mutt. She's half Maltese and half Shih Zu. I am not sure what I would save first in a fire: My iPhone or my dog. Definitely my dog.

I begged and pleaded for this puppy, and I'm glad my husband finally gave in. Toast--she is named after my favorite restaurant--is my sweet fur baby who never gives me lip and doesn't throw herself on the floor at CVS.

My dog is more than my little love, she's also good for my health.

Here are 5 benefits of having a pet.

Dr. Michael Roizen

I recently had a chance to speak with Dr. Michael Roizen on the the phone. I was psyched. He's the doctor who's been on Oprah for years with his RealAge tips.

You must take the RealAge quiz. I was shocked when I did it recently.

These days, he appears on TV with his co-author, Dr. Oz. Their latest book is You, Being Beautiful.

According to Dr. Roizen, we are what we eat. Here are some of Dr. Roizen's tips on nutrition for staying beautiful.
