Mismatched cubbies in Sunset
Okay, I'm all gah-gah over designer Maybelle Imasa-Stukuls' mismatched cubbies in Sunset magazine this month. How wonderful!
I've been looking for fun ways to control the clutter, reorganize, and freshen up the look of my display things. These are perfect for customizing to match your space.
The fixed-size cubby units like the IKEA Expedit bookcases or the Target 6-cube rolling storage, while adorable, won't fit where I need them. I love the idea of being able to custom build a storage area to fit a small or odd-shaped space. Plus, the mix-n-match of woods please me to no end—so eclectic!
Maybelle Imasa-Stukuls uses the custom order Cubes from Stumasa, but these real-wood beauties are $60-$80 a piece.
Still looking for a cheaper alternative to getting this look. Any ideas? I would love to hear them.

You're good, roachiesmom. I'm getting inspired. Thank you.
The more I look at these cubes, the more I'm realizing how handy and adaptable they are. I could switch them around monthly, use them turned up for other storage, and more! I'm starting to visualize wallpaper backing on the paneling too. *sigh*
Yes, Sheri, if you give a mouse an organizing idea, she will see other ways to use it. And once she sees other ways to use it, she will see other ways to customize it. And then...well, you obviously get the concept.
I forgot to mention earlier, you might need the drill bit that comes with the power screwdriver, too. The pilot holes make things easier and help keep the wood from splitting.
Now, imagine them in kids' rooms, using the chalkboard or magnetic paint, cork pieces, wipe-off board, or covered in in fabric with pockets... I will go now before you start throwing things at me. :O)

Make your own. They are very basic. You could get a lot more of them for that $60-80 bucks that way, even in real wood, and you wouldn't necessarily need any more tools than a power screwdriver and some screws. Just have the wood cut to size when you purchase it at Lowe's or Home Depot. Stain or paint, and put them together. Done. And you know it fits your space. For the backs, if you want them, buy a sheet of all-purpose panelling and have it cut to fit, too. It's cheap, sturdier than cardboard backs, lighter than wood, and can be painted. Small nails will do the job to attach it.
