Last weekend we drove all the way from Chicago to southwest Florida with our 10-month-old dog, Jango, in the back seat. Now, you might think that we're crazy for embarking on a 23-hour car trip with a rambunctious, 55-pound puppy, but she was actually fine. We stopped every couple hours, and she slept most of the time. Traveling with a pet was actually a lot easier than I thought. Here are some tips for taking pets on a road trip.
Have you ever road-tripped with your pet?

We adopted my dog, a golden retriever, in Charleston, SC about a year ago. She rides in the car a lot for trips to the beach, dog park, etc. She's also ridden from Charleston to Michigan, 14 hours and then a month later from Michigan to Washington, 36 hours straight. The only time she was any trouble was when my hubby's friend who was in the passenger seat, petted her, she decided that meant she should be in the front seat, on his lap. Otherwise she's great. We don't restrain her though.
Shadow's actually much easier to travel with than the fish was.
Great article for pet's traveling adventures! My dog likes the car, but only when it's parked in the garage! He doesn't travel much. He's older though, so it's important to get them used to it when they are young.

Just an added travel tip for anyone who owns an "aggressive" breed (I know they're really not, but that's what the know-nothing laws say) like a pit bull, doberman, rottweiler, akita, etc: Before you pick your vacation spot make sure there is no BSL (Breed Specific Legislation) wherever it is that you're travelling to. I know multiple people who have had their pets CONFISCATED by animal control from staying with them in a town with bans and the owners were just passing through and unaware of the laws.
