Sense memories are often unforgettable because they are experienced through one of the five senses — sight, sound, touch, smell, or taste. These kinds of memories hold fast in our long-term memory.
I asked several CafeMoms to share one of their favorite childhood sense memories — one unshakable and positive memory that has stayed with them since they were girls.
The answers I got are downright poetic. Completely beautiful. And even more amazing to consider from the perspective of motherhood — to think what our children might someday remember and cherish about home and daily life... Wow!

I delay turning on the heat for the season for as long as possible. If you pay for oil or gas, you know what I mean. The longer we wait to turn on the heat, the longer it stays off and the more money we save.
My husband does not like that I am in charge of the thermostat. We live in the Northeast, and past September, the weather turns. Hardwood floors are extra hard on sub-40 mornings. And climbing out of a toasty shower into what feels like arctic temperatures can be ... difficult. He says he works hard, and what's it all for if he has to walk around the house with chattering teeth, blar de blar blar.
But heat is like potato chips, peanuts, and foot massages. You can't stiff the other foot. You cannot stop at just one. Once the heat is on, it's ON. All the time. And draining my wallet.

My mom always forgets to take her shoes off when she comes into my house. It's a hard habit for her to break, and I get sick of asking, so I let it go. Thank goodness for hard wood.
So the other day she tells me she's getting a new light-colored carpet for her den, but now she's all worried about it getting dirty.
"Um, hello, Mom! Just ask people to take off their shoes before coming in the house!"
"Really?" she says. "I can do that? But I feel so bad ..."
I've had a no-shoe rule in the house for years and I never felt bad or guilty or rude. It's fact that leaving shoes at the mat keeps the house cleaner -- tons of studies on dirt and dust have shown that. Now whether people actually oblige me ... that's a different story.

Unfortunately, when our kids draw on the furniture, on the wall, or, for that matter, anywhere in our home that's not a designated "art project," rarely do the results look this good. (This chair was auctioned off for a children's hospital charity after the kids there decorated it with Sharpies.) Would you agree?
Have your kids every drawn on the furniture or elsewhere in your home where they weren't supposed to?

It's ridiculous how many times I've forgotten my keys and had to call Mr. Cafe Kim to come and let me back into the apartment. This Phone Keys Wallet Rug from Urban Outfitters ($18) is just the reminder I need—saving us both a lot of trouble!
