Sony Baby Monitor, $44.99, Babies R Us
A mom posted a question in Pregnancy about a specific baby monitor, one that can detect movement as well as sound (the one she asked about got mixed reviews from other moms). That got me thinking about baby monitors in general and whether or not most mommies-to-be have one on their registry. From time to time, I'll feature a product here and see what moms have to say -- up first:
Item: Baby monitor
Cost: From about $35 up to $200 +, depending on model and features; some monitor only sound, some monitor sound and movement, some are video monitors
Pros: It can let you know what baby's up to, especially if baby's room isn't near yours
Cons: It may provide more info than you need, thus causing some panicky parent moments or frequent sleep interruptions
Beyond nailing down your registry, there's all sorts of baby shower planning to do -- connect with moms in Baby Shower Ideas to swap tips on gifts, games, cakes, and more.FILED UNDER: baby gear
my baby's room is on the other side of the house from mine, and theres no way i would sleep without having it on. i dont get paranoid about every single little noise, but i have to be able to hear when he cries
A must have! My daughter is almost 2 and we still use it! It has saved my sanity many nights (once she started in her own room)...I have an expensive one (169 or so) but it has a video and night view so I can see her at anytime...totally worth it.
I have two, a movement one and a video one. They haven't gotten a lot of use yet, as baby is still in a bassinet in our room. The movement monitor is going to be a great relief for me, it already has been while he's napped in his crib! The video is nice for if I want to work in the basement or garage or something, and will be very comforting when I need to go to sleep without his little body by my side. :)
No, no monitor needed! With attachment parenting, baby is always near: breastfeeding, babywearing, and co-sleeping. If I needed to put baby down for dishes, cooking, shower, etc....I would either do these in the morning/evening when my husband was home, let one of my older children hold baby, or keep baby near in a portable bassinette/swing.
We have a two-story home, so we have one. I don't use it at night because it kept us awake the one night we tried it, and we can hear our daughter if she wakes up because the rooms are close together. If I'm downstairs, though, I can't hear her without it. Our friend bought us a really nice one, it's a video monitor and we really like it.
DID YOU KNOW......that police scanners can pick up on the frequency of the monitor! My husband used to be a cop in his youth. He and his partner actually caught a criminal in action because of it. They also heard things that were probably better left unheard...lol. Because of this, we do not have one. He refuses to get one.

I think it is a must have!! My daughter is 14 months old and I still use it and freak out if its acting wierd!! My daughter has ALWAYS slept through the night and she has ALWAYS slept in her own bed. I guess it always made me feel better that I could hear her breathing on that thing!! I have a cheaper one and it is sooo sensitive
