being induced induction

The product of my induction.

I wrote a post recently on whether or not being induced means you'll wind up with a C-section, and moms had plenty to say on the topic -- some good and some bad.

I didn't want to be, but when I was two weeks late, I was induced -- and if you've got a scheduled induction on the calendar -- I'm happy to report that it was a good experience and didn't end in a C-section.

There's lots of intense debate around the subject of inductions, but for some mamas (especially those overdue), they may be inevitable.

If it's looking likely that you'll be induced, here are some things to keep in mind, via Lil Sugar.

-- Focus on the positives rather than the change in plans -- As some moms in the induction post I mention above noted, the most important end result of birth is a happy, healthy mom and baby.

-- Life doesn't always cooperate with your birth plan -- CafeMom MamaMadge, a labor and delivery nurse, says that since childbirth is so unpredictable, it's important to stay flexible.

-- Bonus: There won't be a mad dash to the hospital -- cafemama said that a scary car ride to the hospital while she was having strong contractions was one reason she chose a home birth for her second baby. She didn't want to repeat it. And if you're being induced, you'll get to avoid it altogether.

-- Be aware that you may be sent home after your scheduled time to come in -- If the L&D rooms are full, you may get bumped. Scheduled births take a backseat to spontaneous ones.

-- Your freedom may be restricted -- Most women who are induced are confined to the bed so the L&D team can monitor contractions and fetal heartbeat.

For more on what to expect, see the full slide show.

All inductions are different. Mine started with the breaking of my waters and, unlike some mamas, even with the epidural, I could *feel* my contractions and knew when to push. Some moms report that contractions are stronger and more painful when induced.

If you've given birth before and were induced, what would you tell first-time moms about the experience?

Jesse...

I was induced twice due to high blood pressure. My contractions were not extremely painful like some people say.  My labor was 8 hours from the time they started the medicine til I had my children in my arms.  I loved my experiences, especially since I am a huge planner and didn't like the idea of just waiting for labor to begin.  Of course I rather not of had troubles with my blood pressure though.

I demanded to be induced with my first and was induced with my second cause he was taking his sweet ass time after my water broke. The next doctor to give me pitocin dies.

With my first son I had to get Piticin to restart my labor twice. I didn't have an epi and got my last dose of iv pain meds with my first dose of pit.

With my baby, I was scheduled for induction. I was already in the hospital on bedrest, but was transfered back to labor and delivery the night before to get cervidil. I was already contracting. My water broke by itself, I did get the epi because I had back labor and contractions were stronger than with my first even with the piticoin.

I guess every birth is different. I don't think one is better than the other, but both were different.

I got induced at 31 weeks, I had no problems with it at all.  The contractions were pretty crazy but I got an epidural and everything was fine.  The whole process took about 6 hours.  I kind of hope they have to induce me this time around.

I was induced with both my pregnancies and they were both vaginal births. I also only used nubain for pain and was drug free for the last hour of labor both times. I didn't get an epidural and am glad for me that I didn't. I know the true idea to pain management is to relax and breath through it. I had to tell myself relax, a relaxed body produces less chemicals to make things tense and painful.

I was induced with 4 of my 5.  I was over due with 3 and the first was due to incompetent medical personnel who refused to acknowledge my water was leaking so my labor stalled. And guess what.  No C -sections!  All normal births.  2 natural (no pain meds)  I have a history of having big babies.  My last was my C-section.  Again I went 2 weeks over after begging to be induced.  I told them he would end up being huge and need a c-section delivery.  Guess what.  I was right.  Imagine that.  He was 10 pounds 4 ounces.  Sometimes it is frustrating when the doctors don't listen.  It's my body.  I know what's going on with it.  Ugh.  If I ever do it again I will do a vbac and hopfully be induced since I don't seem to be able to go into labor on my own.

Tanya...
The problem is people being induced unnecessarily. This is all great advice if induction is needed but being overdue, having a "big baby", etc. Are not reasons for induction. Wwomen need to do research rather than blindly trusting their doctors.

I was induced with my son. I got tired of a different nurse coming in every hour to check me. It got old real quick so I announced "Y'all need to draw straws and designate one crotch checker per shift. I am not a 'sure thing' and the next heifer that sticks her hand up inside me owes me dinner and flowers." I had one nurse for each shift check me from then on.

I was induced with my first son.  The contractions were extremely intense, and I ended up with an epidural.  Despite that, I had a vaginal delivery after twenty minutes of pushing.

I was induced with my first daughter.  She was 11 days late.  I went in that morning and they inserted the gel.  I was at 2cm when I went in.  She was born 12 hours later.  I had no problems with it at all.  I'm kind of glad that I didn't have to deal with not knowing if my contractions were real or not or my water breaking somewhere.  I was glad I was induced.

With my second daughter, I had a midwife.  DD was born 4 days late.  The day that she was born, I took the midwifery concoction and it worked like a charm.  She was born 9 hours after feeling my first contraction and less than 2 hours after actually going to the hospital!
