Photo from Old Navy
There seems to be a fair amount of debate about whether anyone, pregnant or not pregnant, can pull off a long summer dress. So I decided to put it to the test and try the one that has been sitting in my closet for the past two months -- scary admission, I know.
I bought it from Old Navy on a (hormone-induced?) whim way back in March: the empire cut would be good for my growing belly, I thought, and it¹s long enough that I could play trucks with my toddler on the floor and not flash anyone.
But then it hung there, laughing at me.
So I finally took out for a test drive. And...the dress ROCKS. I'm not super-tall (I'm 5'6"), but I don't think I look stumpy in it -- the key is to make sure the hem is an inch or so off the floor, so it doesn¹t drag. It has a narrow silhouette that's flattering, and the jersey fabric is weighty enough to keep it from billowing out and making me look huge. The one thing I did was layer a slim-fitting scoopneck t-shirt underneath, because I'm not really comfortable going without a bra. (A little white tank would be good, too.)
So my vote is firmly in the "yes, you can wear this" column. I'm kicking myself for not doing it sooner...and this weekend I'm going back to buy these gladiator sandals to wear with it.
Do you have a perfect summer pregnancy dress? And where did you find it?

I actually bought one from Old Navy, but it made me look like a huge whale. I guess I don't have the right body type or shape or height to do it. I think they're so cute and comfy though, so I was disappointed.
I bought a maxi dress at Target for like $24, right now there much cheaper ladies. Im 9 months prego and they are soooo comfy. I love wearing mine. Mine is like a teal color and looks so good even though im huge i dont feel so huge when i wear it.
I can't! I'm 5'7 and I look aweful in these dresses. Even when I was pregnant I just looked like a beached whale. I think you have to have a certain body type, even while pregnant, to pull this look off.
Hey Madamekatekate-- you have the same reaction as all my petite friends to this trend....but let me point out that Nicole Richie (who is famous for this look, whether you like her style or not) is only 5'1" !! Granted, she has the figure of a twelve-year-old girl, even when pregnant, but... Maybe there's hope? :)
I actually bought 2 dresses from Old Navy for like $20 each from their maternity section. There's a black one with little sleeves and and a brown one with thick straps. They're both super soft cotton and depending on which shoes i wear (or can fit in that day) and what I accessories I wear, I can either dress it up or make is super casual with flip-flops.....
I bought my 1st Maxi dress at Target also (like previous poster) and I love it! I then bought another one and I plan to buy more! I never wore dresses before because I hate my huge legs but these are SO comfy and don't show any leg! I love them and plan to wear them my entire pregnancy!

I love these type of dresses and find that I am most comfy in them for the same reasons you stated, I can be cool but still able to play with my toddler- not to mention I think they'll be perfect for after I have the baby too and am still hiding a bit of baby belly, lol....I often wear mine to the park with my toddler and my friends call me "earth mother" because I'm usually barefoot as well, lol....
